Ireland now has a higher per capita income than Britain. A lot has changed there, not just the coming of the Euro. But some of the old things will be missed.

HINT FOR AMERICAN READERS

This is English humour... You first need to know that 'spending a penny' is slang for performing a certain important physiological function. It comes from the fact that public pay toilets cost 1d years ago.

1d = 1 dime? [just kidding!] I thought that this was why the Isles were always so green [ducking]!

Can I ask you a question? WHAT exactly are the Isles?

Don't ever dare put the Irish REPUBLIC in the British Isles, if ye don't mind. To many forefathers died, and anyway, the Brits have no goddamn sense of humour *L*

Put it this way, if someone asks me am I a Republican, they ain't askin' me am I an American Conservative *LOL*

Well, I suppose it could be Irish humour. Do they use "spend a penny" in the same context there?

1d = 1 old penny. Comes from Latin 'denarius'.

Since decimalisation the abbreviation 'p' is used instead of 'd'.

This high per capita income has placed Ireland second to the USA in the gap between the rich and poor in society, according to a comment on the radio today.

The ladder is longer but the bottom rung is closer to the ground.

It's not so hard to see where Gerry bin Adams will be targeting his campaign in 2002.

It's common across the English speaking British Isles but only the Republic of Ireland will be 'euronating' in the near future. The rest will continue to 'spend a penny'.

Those who like a little light 'relief' might like to take advantage of Dr Paisley's facilties at Martyrs Memorial Free Presbyterian Church in Belfast. His followers are known as the Free Ps!

Many of our car parks have a sign which says 'P Free' and our drunks take the message literally.

Where's your sense of humour?

The Irish REPUBLIC is now usually called Ireland and it remains part of the British Isles, formerly known as the isles of the Pretani.
