Boy, the old brain! I thought I'd never forget the lineup of songs The Who played at the Concert for NYC, but I did. Which song came after "Behind Blue Eyes" and before "Won't Get Fooled Again"? And is "Baba O'Reilly" the song I think of as "Teenage Wasteland"?
Anybody who wants to offer any thoughts on the Who's reception, please do so. This will be the subject of my next column on Enter Stage Right.

"Who are you" (title song of "Who Are You" album) + Baba O'Reilly is correct :)

I didn't see the show, but I saw a snippet of them playing "Who Are You?" - maybe that was it.

PS - remember that the last stop of 2000 campaign found W in Little Rock playing "Won't Get Fooled Again"

I was happy to see Townsend playing electric on stage again, and not being in a soundproof booth.

They opened with Who Are You, then Behind Blue Eyes, then Baba O'Reilly and finished with Won't Get Fooled Again. The only band to play four songs. They tore the roof off the Garden.

The Who was the best act on Saturday night. They were the defintion of rock n roll.

Does anybody have the "libretto" for the Operaman performance? I've been laughing about it for 2.5 days and I can't remember all the lines & rhymes.

Yes it was "WHO ARE YOU". I wished that they would sing more songs they were the best thing on the show.

Oops I take that back - the best thing was the booing of Hillary, Bubba, Mark Green and Richard Gere.

Listening to the lyrics for "won't get fooled again", I have come to the conclusion that this was a strong statement of libertarian beliefs. Does anyone know this to be true of them? I know it is a pretty straightforward song, but could anybody else offer any other interpretations?
BTW, it is my all time favorite song...

Oh Yeah!!!

Someone once referred to the young Pete Townshend as a nose on a stick...

but could anybody else offer any other interpretations?I don't know anything about their politics, but the Who may have offered their own interpretation of their song, or at least a different take on it. According to what I read on that Humongous Concert thread on Saturday night, the last line "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss" was deliberately omitted. They did not sing it.
Somehow I don't think they left it out because they feared being booed :).

I caught that too! Brilliant!!!

Apparently they "see a difference" :-)...

Not just 4 songs, but long songs. Won't Get Fooled Again generally ways in at 8 minutes, Baba O'Reilly and Who Are You? are typically in the 6 or 7 range (in typical live performances, I didn't catch the show so I don't know how they weighed in Saturday). Behind Blue Eyes is the only "normal" lengthed song in that list.
And, of course, the play list proves something I've said for years. If you're only going to own one Who album it should be Who's Next, it lacks the artistry of Tommy and the grandeur of Quadrophenia, but it's 45 minutes of solid kick butt Who style Rock & Roll that really encapsulates everything The Who was and represented. And most of the bonus tracks that have been added to the CD should have been classics (Water blows me away everytime, what a song).
