DO YOU REMEMBER OCTOBER 23, 1983?
JVERITAS

Posted on 10/23/2001 6:28:54 PM PDT by jveritas

Many of us forgot October 23rd 1983, a black day in American history. At that day, Islamic fundamentalists terrorists, most probably Hozaballah and Islamic Jihad, sent a suicide car bomb to the Marines barrack in West Beirut and killed 241 United States soldiers and sailors. It was the biggest single day American military casualty lost since WWII. This terrorist attack was not possible without the funding, planning, and support of Both Syria and Iran. As we are waging our war on terrorism, we should remember October 23rd 1983 and eliminate these evil terrorist organizations like Hozaballah and the Islamic Jihad, and make both Syria and Iran pay a very heavy price for all the terrorist actions they committed against the United States of America.

I was at Camp Lejeune that fatefull day when I heard the news. I later found out I lost two friends in the blast. I know a lot of folks here are Reagan fans (and I rather like him myself), but he didn't do a damn thing as far as I'm concerned, to nip this terrorist sh!t in the bud. Putting Marines in a defensive position without rounds in the chamber, what kind of nonsense is that?

And another thing while I'm on a rant. What kind of photo op was that that PX Kelly was staging with the wounded Marine who could not see. Kelly told how the Marine reached up and felt his collar to feel his stars...I swear that was some pre-Clintonesque BS! And how 'bout Reagan saying that he took responsibility? How much of that is like Janet Reno and Waco?

If we would have pulled the Marines out and leveled Beruit then and there, they would have got the message never to fvck with us and we'd probably still have a pretty skyline in NYC.

241 United States soldiers and sailors.

220 Marines, 18 sailors and 3 soldiers.

Yes indeed, some of us have never forgotten 23 October 1983.

I don't know about staged. The story you are referencing, I believe, was the one where a Marine had been blinded, unable to speak, severely burned, hospitalized, visited by the Commandant, and the Marine motioned for a piece of paper when asked if there was anything he wanted. The Marine simply scribbled SF for Semper Fi. Is that the one you remember?

I was stationed on Camp Pendleton at the time and we were all pissed. We wanted to go over there so bad. But we never were sent. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, nothing was ever done about it which is a real shame. We went into Grenada a few days after that (not me but many of my fellow Marines) and the Beirut atrocity was soon off the radar screen.

For a while, I thought President Reagan was going to respond and that I might be among those sent over. There was a couple of times that fall that we were woken at 3AM and deployed to an airstrip. It turned out to be practice for a mission that never came however.

Yeh, but Kelly said that he reached up and felt his "stars" just to make sure it was the commandant.

I believe Grenada was '82, just prior to the bombing. I forget if exactly the Beirut bombing was before or after Grenada, but I know at least one float rerouted to Grenada and then went to Beirut. They weren't the ones hit in Beirut.

How 'bout the four marines killed in San Salvador in May of 85 by terrorists. Nothing was done about that either. In fact in 1995 (May 21, 1995) 60 Minutes did a piece on it and the @sshole who planned it was living in San Fransico.

They're just like children. They push, and push, and push, till you put your foot down.

Congress had tied the military's hands over there. Bullets weren't even being issued for fear some local snipers might get hurt.

Although I have a high personal dislike of Paul Xavier Kelley, there were others present when that wounded Marine grabbed his collar. Reagan accepted responsibility for what happened, something that Kelley did not do and in fact specifically stated in his Congressional testimony that he was not responsible. I stood in the rain at Cherry Point to hear Reagan after the memorial at Lejeune, I wouldn't have stood in the rain to hear Kelley. Had Kelley not been such a political putz then Webb probably wouldn't have picked Gray to succeed him. That move may very well have saved the Corps.

Reagan later wrote that 23 October 1983 was the saddest day of his life and I believe him. His biggest mistake was in allowing a head case like Bud McFarlane, who let down his fellow Marines and knew better, to dictate policy in Lebanon.

I have a cousin who was one of the survivors of the Beirut bombing. He was pretty shook up about it when he came back. While he was going to college and working at a hotel, he was shot and killed in a robbery. His co-worker, who was also shot, was able to identify the culprit and testified at the trial. The shooter is now on death row in Texas.
