An Open Letter to President Bush: Events of 10-24-01 Make Me Angry
my own brain on overdrive ^ | 10-25-01 | me

Posted on 10/25/2001 8:22:35 AM PDT by LiberteeBell

Dear President Bush:

A preface: I have supported you from the beginning of your campaign, I voted for you and I protested the election debacle. On January 20th, 2001, you returned integrity and honor to the White House in a way that I could never have imagined. I took my children out of school on a miserably cold and misty day to watch your motorcade drive by on your first visit to my city. Though I don't agree with your every policy, for the most part, I have been very happy with your presidency.

Since the horror of 9-11, I've supported you wholeheartedly. Your speeches have been inspirational and I believe you have a knack for truly connecting with We the People. I was thrilled to hear you say you were going after the evil in the world and would do whatever it takes to hunt them down.

That said, the events yesterday left me with a hollow pit in my stomach and frankly, made me very angry.

First, the Postmaster General stated that he could not guarantee that the mail is safe. That is a factual statement. Then, Ari Fleischer, in true Clintonesque style, tried to spin the Postmaster General's statement to be false. He says, "be alert".

I have a news flash for Ari: most of us don't have a staff in a remote building opening and checking our mail. I don't know how to be alert for spores that can't be seen by the naked eye. How in the heck do I know if my mail ran through the contaminated processing centers?

The FBI announced that they essentially don't know how to make the men they have in custody talk. Isn't there an historical precedent for threatening to or sending them to Israel for interrogation? If so, why aren't they doing it? Aren't you interested in preventing more terrorism on American soil?

Yesterday, Colin Powell spoke of rebuilding Afghanistan. We aren't even finished taking it down! I'm sure the rebuilding will be done, as usual, on the backs of American Citizens through boat-loads of our tax dollars.

Vice President Cheney stated that there will be further attacks on U.S. soil and for the first time in history, we will likely lose more people here than overseas. I don't know what to make of this statement. Do you know something is going to happen? Are you waiting for something to happen so we have an excuse to attack someone?

Congress passed the anti-terrorism bill further eroding the rights of American Citizens. Now, I'm willing to make some sacrifices in war time. However, I resent giving up my freedoms while illegal aliens and non-citizens continue to live here unfettered.

Your speech yesterday once again focused on the economy. I understand this. But I have a question: what kind of economy are we going to have if someone unleashes something like small pox in the U.S.?

You are telling the American public to go on with their lives, while being alert. You are telling us to be patient as the War on Terrorism unfolds. I believe Americans are doing what has been asked of them.

But my patience is wearing thin. I do not understand why illegal aliens and non-citizens, especially those from countries hostile to the United States, are not being deported as we speak. I do not understand why our borders are not closed while we are at war. It blows my mind that four Syrians were let in to our country to take flying lessons! How can you expect us to continue our vigilance while potential terrorists roam amongst us?

What will it take to have these people deported? Another spectacular attack like 9-11? More hideous weapons of mass destruction unleashed upon us? A nuclear attack? Ten thousands of deaths? Hundreds of thousands of deaths?

No, I do not expect a nanny-state, for government to protect me. I do however, expect the government to provide for the common defence. In this case, American Citizens should come first.

Sincerely,

An American Citizen

Well, the other points of your letter didn't particularly upset me, but President Bush bagging out of the governors' dinner (which was to support Earley and Schundler) definitely did.

My wife works for a local NBC affiliate. They have all mail opened in a remote facility: a trailer in the parking lot. Gotta keep those talking heads safe, ya know. Guess who has to go out to the trailer to open the mail? That's right, my wife, the station's accountant.

I keep telling her to quit, but she won't.

I guess I was so busy being angry about all the other stuff that I didn't realize he had bugged out of the dinner.

He probably doesn't want to appear too partisan right now--it might upset the dems. /sarcasm

American Citizens should come first.

Couldn't agree more!

It has nothing to do with partisanship. It has everything to do with the appearance of putting aside the serious business to raise money. Cheney is going in his place. If Bush did this fundraiser, he would catch hell from the media, from the dems, from everyone. He had no choice.

Stop whining and take charge of your own life here at home. If you are worried about small pox get a vaccination, if you are worried about anthrax don't open you mail, follow protocol. Good grief, be a man!

1/20/01 was a Saturday. Your kids go to school on Saturdays?

I completely disagree. If Bush doesn't do this fundraiser, he'll still catch Heck from the Dems and media, but you can add many of his loyal base to that number.

It's not my call, but I don't think she'd care for that very much.

Sorry folks fund raisers are NOT the thing W. needs to be doing. The thing with the mail is that the postmaster is just telling you the truth, sh*t common sense should be telling you the same thing. Stop acting like children when this country is a war with people who would like to see us all dead. Gee I hope we would all show a little more courage in the face of adversity and stop looking to blame someone. I am glad the Brits weren't as whiney as many Americans seem to be when the bombs were falling on London during WWII.

If you are worried about small pox get a vaccination

WHERE????
I tried to get one through MY Primary Care Physician (I got one before I went overseas, back in 1980; my husband got his via the Navy, 1989). No soap.

If I could get my family vaccinated, I would!

I agree and I advise you not to get into pissing matches with the members of the fan club. I was especially upset by the Cheney statement, an open admission of surrender or resignation if you prefer, in view of the fact that the potential perpetrators present on these shores are already known and identifiable by, yes, race and nationality and perhaps even by religious faith.

There is no doubt that your feelings in that letter are also felt by many members (including myself) in this forum. I was not a Bush Supporter until 9/11. In fact I didnt care much for American politics at all before then.
I have however always felt that our boarder should have been more secure and that all hostile countries flights should have been looked at more carefully. This whole business about letting flights arive from countries that will not share a passenger list.....rubbish...Every passenger on that plane should be checked three time over and if they do not have proper ID they should be detained or deported on the spot. Also learn to speak English. This should be a requirement for anyone seeking a visa to the States
Sorry but the ways of the old USA have got to be considered. Sure WE should have the freedom we have always enjoyed but what about those that want to cause us harm. Should they be privy to the same rights as us. Times have changed and the USA has to restucture it's open door policy.

I have taken charge of my life, thank you very much. I just want straight information from the government, minus spin designed to "keep us calm" and I want the illegals and non-citizens out of here.

Small pox vaccinations are not currently available unless you know something the rest of us don't know.

BTW, I can't be a man, I'm a woman.

If you are worried about small pox get a vaccination,

It's not commercially available. I tried to get some for my kids about a year and a half ago.

If you are worried about small pox get a vaccination

I'd be getting one right now if not for the fact that the federal government has restricted access to the vaccine.

What will it take to have these people deported?

Please do tell us the distinguishing physical characteristic you would use to identify an illegal alien from an American citizen. What specific methods do you endorse in rounding them up?
