Trooper Collapses In Osceola; Hazmat Team Called Northbound Lanes Of Turnpike Closed Posted: 11:31 a.m. EDT October 26, 2001 Updated: 11:57 a.m. EDT October 26, 2001

ST. CLOUD, Fla. -- A Florida Highway Patrol trooper became very sick after writing a ticket Friday morning along the Florida Turnpike in Osceola County.

The trooper had pulled over a black 1999 Nissan Maxima along the Turnpike south of St. Cloud. He had just finished writing the ticket when he collapsed.

The northbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike are closed around mile marker 233 as a hazmat team conducts an investigation. The trooper is being flown by helicopter to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The motorist fled from the scene, but it's unclear if the driver had anything to do with the incident.

Hazmat teams are checking the area for any signs of dangerous chemicals, and the northbound lanes of the turnpike are expected to be closed for several hours.

Occured about 11:00 EDT. Northbound mile marker 236 of Florida Turnpike. Near St. Cloud, 20 miles from Disney, headed twoard Disney.

Officer is FHP trooper. Stopped black nissan with at least two men (speeding.) Issued ticket, then exposed (sprayed) by driver. Comment above also made at that time. Car then sped off, leaving trooper semi-comncious by side of road. He medivacked to Osceolla Co Hospital and is being, quote "decontaminated."

Car now missing but license plate comes back to Middle Eastern man from Cape Coral area. This very near Naples where some hijacker pilots went to flight school and Atta tried to get crop duster.

A flight attendant on American Airlines Flight 11 called AA headquarters to report the hijacking and described the use of a spray that is consistent with this description. She stated she was having trouble breathing and the spray was used on the passengers.
