What's the difference between a "bump" and a "ping"?

I'm a newbie to FR since October 14th. Love the site and I must say it is addictive. I have three questions for you old timers: 1) What is the difference between a bump and a ping? 2) Which is preferable, a bump or a ping? 3) When may I consider myself an official "FReeper" (Any initiation ceremonies)? I thank you in advance for your help.

Good question. ping or bump?

A bump makes a dull thud when it arrives.

If you bump your head in the wall, you will hear a ping.

You're not a freeper till you've been "Flamed".
You're not really a freeper till Laz makes jokes about you or Registered sends you up in pixels. <Welcome,no dif in bump, ping, BTTT.

The bump keeps the article on the lurkers radar screen, and the ping is typically directed to another or other FReepers - specifically.

There is no difference. Some Freepers are fond of participles, so they append the bumps with pings.

A bump is there to add a more current post to the list, so people searching by latest post have an easier time finding the article.
A ping has a persons screen name in the to line, so when they do a self search they will see the article.
It's just a difference in focus.
You're offical now..

Good question! And what purpose do they serve other than as MegaDittos? Bump to the TOP, of what? Is there a list of high traffic posts somewhere?

A bump, or BTT ("bump to the top") moves the thread to the top of the list of the most recent 20. A ping does the same thing, but it has another purpose - to notify the "pingee" that he or she may be interested in the thread. "Ping" refers to a unix, hence an internet, method of seeing if another station is live.
(I lied. "Ping" notifies the CIA and the NSA, "bump" or "BTT" only notifies the NSA.)

Oh,yeah. There IS one other thing.
You're not really a freeper till you post an "OPUS" saying how much you regret leaving.
And then can't stay away.

"I love cheese." Oh God, don't start THAT again!
To: vacrn
I think I must have bumped my ping, because it isn't working. Every time I try to use it, it just makes this "Bttt" noise.
To: vacrn
A ping is when you use the whole chicken.

Yes, there is an initiation ceremony, and it's pretty gruesome stuff!
Beyond telling you that it involves porcine nasal mucous membranes and an obscene quantity of smelly toejam-like cheese, I am not at liberty to enlighten you any further at this time...
