Blair says absolutely no doubt Bin Laden will be captured

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said in a newspaper interview here he was "completely confident" terror suspect Osama bin Laden would be captured and brought to international justice.

"I am completely confident we will get the mass murderer Osama bin Laden, of that I have absolutely no doubt," he told the tabloid Mirror.

Saudi-born militant bin Laden, who lives under the protection of Afghanistan's Taliban regime, is accused by Washington and London of organising the September 11 terrorist assault on the United States.

The US-led air strikes in Afghanistan, in which Britain is playing a mainly logistical role, are in retaliation for September 11.

"We must hound down bin Laden, obliterate his terrorist network, bring him to justice, and end this threat. We will do that, of that, I am completely confident," the prime minister told the paper.

Blair's comments contradicted those made last week, when he said bin Laden would probably end up being killed during a bombing raid, rather than being captured.

"He is well protected and well armed. And I have always thought it unlikely that he will be turning up in a court one day," Blair told the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

The marked shift by Blair comes after a newspaper poll Tuesday revealed the British public's growing disaffection with the bombing campaign as a means of hunting down bin Laden.

Tony must have a good crystal ball. Maybe he needs to be more realistic. "We may not catch bin Laden, but we'll blow the heck out of any place we think he might be."

It is probably more dangerous to try to capture someone, than to simply blow them up. It is safer to shoot first, shoot second, shoot third, and if anyone is left alive, to ask questions. We don't want him to enjoy the next 40 years in a nice warm, comfortable cell, with cable TV, telephone, 3 meals a day and medical care, and celebrity staus. He ain't got it coming.

Blair's empty rhetoric has made 60 million brits a major future target. The one reason that no-one else save the IRA blew things up on that island is that Britain harbors and protects a large number of terrorist organizations and their headquarters. Once they go...

We'll see how this pans out.

Spot on, but the one man 'story' is simple enough to sell to the bleating masses and the Media to understand. Most of these militants are Egytian but little is said about what the Egyptian government is doing against this as their main foreign sponsor is [....] fill in the gap. I think it is more than ironic that the current 'greatest threat to the West' are products/former allies of the West...

How do you get away with you name like that?

Tony doesn't get it... we only want Osama captured one piece at a time. Not all at once! And the pieces sure will be ripe sitting in a courtroom.
