The Endeavor and this week's Alert

They just took the shuttle Endeavor to the launch pad. Given the current alert, it occurred to me.... What is the math on bin Ladin's boys with a Stinger in the Cape? Could a launcher Stinger missle itself be shot down? How far from the launch pad could a terrorist be and still be in range?

You can't get within Stinger rage of the launch site. by the time it's over open water it's too high for a Stinger.

I question whether a Stinger would be effective. A Stinger is designed to home in upon the heat from a much smaller source. It probably would melt if if tried to follow the exhaust from the shuttle to its source.

I'd be pretty easy to take out the shuttle. And you don't need a stinger. But in the vein of "loose lips", I don't think I'll say how I think it could be done.
