Educate me: Tipping: Who and How Much?

I tip: Barbers, Wait Staff, Cabbies, Movers, and even slackers in their ice cream and coffee shops! (I live in Austin.) I give 15% though I honestly think that's high. I'd be happy giving 10% but some folks insist it's 20%. No one gets less than 10% and you have to be in some sort of foul mood or darned incompetent to get nothing from me. I've given 25% for superlative service and/or a great meal/time. Does that sound fair? Who should I give to and to whom shouldn't I?

I shouldn't have said "even slackers." Service is service no matter who provides it. But I do find funny some of the places that people leave tip jars to be filled when all they're doing is ringing up the sale.

I am wondering too...how much should you tip the baggers at the commissary?...I have never been comfortable with what I should tip and no one I ask seems to have a standard answer....anybody have an idea?

Best tip I ever got:
I'm in the receiving line of my own wedding and my Dad's best friend comes up.
"George," I say, "Do you have any advice for me on my wedding day?"
"Never buy a house with a flat roof," he says.
Words to live by.

I generally tip at 20%...the math is easy. I generally tip at 10%. The math is even easier.

I generally tip about 25%, but for most waiters, 15% is what's expected if they have done their job.
BTW, anyone who's every waited tables can tell you who the best tippers are by age, race, the way the order their steaks prepared, whether they drink, smoke, etc. The same holds for the worst tippers.
Having put myself through school waiting tables, I'll usually leave $5.00 on a $20.00 check, and you'd be surprised how the level of service rises the next time you come in. I'll also tip $5.00 on a haircut regardless of the price. I haven't waited at a Supercuts in years, so there are benifits associated with greasing the wheels.
Best,
Bootyist

Tipping guidelines is a great way to compare Conservatives to LiberalsA conservative will tip on the basis of how well the service was (rewarding Excellense)
A liberal believes that everyone should be tipped the same amount regardless of the level of service (Rewarding Incompetance)
There you have it, the basic difference between a Conservative and a Liberal

A buck a bag is good enough. These guys aren't paying taxes on this. My son brought home $500 one week after Xmas when he was home from college.

Hmm... I do know that during the holidays, you should always tip between 5-10% above normal. Oh, and never leave pennies on the table for as part of a tip. It is considered rude.

As a cold hearted capitalist extremist, I subscribe to the views of Walter Williams who describes dollar bills as, "pleasure certificates." The economy, and exchange of currency is a reflection of our ability to bring happiness, pleasure and satisfaction to others. I tip based not only on what "pleasure," or satisfaction a service brings to me, but on anticipated future relationships. When I first moved to Louisiana, I spent several months before I found a barber who could give me the haircut I was looking for. A generous tip the first time 'round, has insured I was remembered, what I wanted was remembered, and oh, by the way, I don't sit waiting in line anymore.
There are all kinds of charts and graphs for who to tip what. My opinion is every working man should know the value of a dollar. If the kid hauling your groceries to the car saves you the trouble of five dollars worth of your labor, then he should get tipped just that. If he's a snot nosed brat and makes you wish you loaded your own groceries, than tell him so, and don't tip him a damn thing.
The free market is a good thing, and quality service in a timely manner is premium; likewise, shoddy service merits what it does. Pay based on your estimate of the situation; it perpetuates capitalism and helps instill a work ethic in people new to the job market. If someone goes out of their way to provide me service in a restaurant, hotel or parking garage, I'll return the favor with a reflection I feel commensurate with the value of what their services afforded me.

Wish I knew. I usually tip $3-$4 for commissary baggers, figuring out to about 10-15 minutes work and under $100 total groceries (at Hawaii's inflated prices, so fewer groceries than on the mainland). I know lots of people who only tip a buck or two.

You hit the nail on the head!!
A tip is a gratuity, whitch is meant to show your gratitude for the service you have been provided. If the service was worthy of gratitude, I dont feel cheated at all if I tip up to 25 or 30%.
If the service sucked. You can expect my gratitude to show and you wont get one thin dime! If you tip this way consistantly, the second time someone serves you they will know your standards and the service will improve dramatically, even if the person waiting on you is a liberal.(They may be ignorant, but they aint stoopid!)

Think about it,
When you reward incompetence, you are dishonoring excellence, and when you reward excellence you are condemning incompetence.
I beleive this is the basic difference between Conservatives/Capitolist and Liberals/Socialist

Don't forget pizza delivery drivers. Yes I was one once, best job I ever had! They have to pay for gasoline and the considerable wear and tear on their vehicles.
Waiters and waitresses have no such expenses. And most waitstaff seem incredibly inattentive and don't seem to have a clue that a tip depends on their level of service. They just expect it!
To: MJY1288
I am not questioning you. You just may be correct. TIP means "to insure promptness" or politeness if you will. I tip 10% and I always round off to the higher #.
As for incompetence, if the waiter/waitress is new, then I allow them a lot of slack.
