Nov. 5 - 6, 2001 Aurora Gallery back to spaceweather.com |
Summary: A fast-moving coronal mass ejection (CME) that raced away from the Sun on Nov. 4th swept past our planet at 0150 UT on Nov 6th (8:50 p.m. EST on Nov 5th); the impact triggered widespread auroras reaching as far south as 43 degrees magnetic latitude. Sky watchers in many US states -- including Tennessee, Alabama, the Carolinas, Texas and California -- reported vivid red and green auroras. Although I have lived here in Florida for over 30 years, I was raised in Iowa and have fond memories of seeing the "Northern Lights" (as we called them back then) during the crisp, clear Autumn nights. It is something I really miss.
I went outside last night, but I could not be certain that the glow that I was seeing was the aurora or distant city lights. I'll check tonight and compare.
Nice pictures!
Here's what you missed!
...and guess what? I wasn't even DRINKING last night!
Yes, they really are.
The first image looks very much like the view that my Daughter and I saw about 10:45 that evening....near Moosick City, TN
Bump - for passin' around
I'm a "city girl" anyway so probably wouldn't have been able to see much with all the lights around.
Can't believe I lived in MI for 27 years and never once saw the NL.
Are they expecting any repeat performances soon?
Tonight would be good, I'd be willing to drive to a darker locale.
