back to spaceweather.com
Summary: A fast-moving coronal mass ejection (CME) that raced away from the Sun on Nov. 4th swept past our planet at 0150 UT on Nov 6th (8:50 p.m. EST on Nov 5th); the impact triggered widespread auroras reaching as far south as 43 degrees magnetic latitude. Sky watchers in many US states -- including Tennessee, Alabama, the Carolinas, Texas and California -- reported vivid red and green auroras.

Thank you so much! I am creating a new folder in which to save these excellent photos.

Although I have lived here in Florida for over 30 years, I was raised in Iowa and have fond memories of seeing the "Northern Lights" (as we called them back then) during the crisp, clear Autumn nights. It is something I really miss.

Thanks.

I went outside last night, but I could not be certain that the glow that I was seeing was the aurora or distant city lights. I'll check tonight and compare.

Nice pictures!

Are you sure these aren't stills from the additional scenes in the rerelease of Spielberg's film E.T.? :-)

Beautiful pictures! In western NC, we only saw a reddish glow in the northern sky.

My wife is an aurora buff, she saw a great display a little over a week ago, and I got to see the show last night. The numbers at Spaceweather were almost off the scale! My wife was really excited by the numbers she was reading. Good thing the weather cooperated and let us see the show! There were really vivid colors, mostly reds and greens, some blues and yellows, with some rays and curtains, overall very very nice. It was my first aurora show, but it won't be the last since I now live in the northwest.

Outside of Raleigh, I saw what best could be described in the fellow's photo from Roanoke, VA, laced with an intermittant white light (much like a faint carnival-type spotlight) that scanned through the red in waves. Pretty cool.

...and guess what? I wasn't even DRINKING last night!

"Beautiful pictures! "
======================================

Yes, they really are.

The first image looks very much like the view that my Daughter and I saw about 10:45 that evening....near Moosick City, TN

Da*n....I didn't even go outside to look after reading the thread last night cause I figured we were too far south to see anything.

I'm a "city girl" anyway so probably wouldn't have been able to see much with all the lights around.

Can't believe I lived in MI for 27 years and never once saw the NL.

Are they expecting any repeat performances soon?

Tonight would be good, I'd be willing to drive to a darker locale.
