Dying man drives himself to funeral home
The Associated Press
11/6/01 6:51 AM
MAPLEWOOD, N.J. (AP) -- An ailing elderly man apparently drove himself to a funeral home and then died in his car, authorities said.
Harold Saber, 80, of Verona, had not been feeling well Friday night and left his home early Saturday, relatives said. He then drove to the Bernheim-Apter-Goldsticker Suburban Funeral Chapel in Maplewood, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Relatives said Saber, a retired pharmacist, had been hospitalized for most of the summer and did not want to go back, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported in Tuesday's editions.
When he was discovered missing, relatives told authorities that Saber had often said he would take himself to a funeral home "when it was his time."
The nature of Saber's ailment was not immediately known.

Now here's a guy who knows where he's going and knows how to get there!
I wonder if he was wearing his best suit?

Reminds me of the George Carlin bit about the Two-Minute Warning...
If you had one, what would you do?

That was actually a pretty thoughtful thing he did. I'm glad I'm not that thoughtful.

Things to think about when you drive yourself to the funeral home:
Do you shower, brush your teeth?
Do you think about girls (or guys)?
Do you check your car's gas, oil, etc.?
Do you put on your best cloths?
Do you wear clean underware?
Do you check the stock market?
Do you call friends?
Do you write a note?
etc.

It reminds me of what the fellows did in the War Between the States. In the hospital tent, they would fold their hands "in the position" and wait...considerate of the doctors and nurses. I think they also asked that their feet be tied together ahead of time, which was generally done post-mortem. We have an established history behind us of courage, dignity, and consideration. We should not forget that. They contributed to what we have been freely spending, and not replenishing. We now have the opportunity to do better. That is the "moral high ground" we used to hear about. It was given to us by honorable people's blood, and could be ours again. We will miserably lose the peace if we do not establish ourselves upon it, in our own way, now.

Some funeral homes have drive-through windows where you can view the deceased from your car. But this is the closest I've ever heard of one offering ATM service.

An ailing elderly man apparently drove himself to a funeral home ...What ... with the cost of funerals these days, the poor man was just trying to save a few bucks. ;)

I wonder if he was part Scottish. They charge you extra to pick-up a body, after all. Think of the savings when you deliver yourself! (Or would that be "your self"?)
