Media recount story set to break
First stories on Florida ballot review will run Monday

CHICAGO (CBS.MW) -- Temporarily lost in the aftermath of Sept. 11, what could be one of the biggest news stories of the year is about to break. Beginning in February, the National Opinion Research Center, working at the behest of a consortium of media companies, labored for months to tally uncounted votes in the disputed election that eventually led to George W. Bush's victory in Florida and, ultimately, to his presidency. NORC's tabulation of 180,000 ballots that did not register votes during initial machine counts was complete before Labor Day and was slated for media release in mid-September. The data were held back at the behest of sponsors who felt they did not have the resources to analyze it properly with so many reporters busy covering the attacks. See full story. However, NORC quietly turned over its findings early this week. The Associated Press said Thursday that its first coverage will go out on the wire Sunday for newspaper use the following day. Follow-ups begin Monday for use Tuesday. A spokeswoman for the New York Times Co. (NYT: news, chart, profile) told CBS.MarketWatch.com late Thursday that the company's flagship paper will run with its own story Monday. Apart from the AP and the Times, companies contributing to the estimated $500,000 cost of the project were Dow Jones (DJ: news, chart, profile), Washington Post Co. (WPO: news, chart, profile), Tribune Co. (TRB: news, chart, profile), AOL Time Warner (AOL: news, chart, profile) and a couple of independent Florida newspapers. Under the terms of the unusual agreement, the results would be given to all consortium members at the same time, with an agreed period in which to independently analyze them before going public. Other news outlets have done their own recounts in Florida, with results showing everything from a larger margin for Bush to a slight edge for Democrat Al Gore, depending on how the ballots are interpreted. It's amazing how a story that's already dead somehow manages to be the story that wouldn't die at the same time.

The delay was to figure out an "interpretation" of the ballots that would show Gore ahead--just like the "interpretation" of the 14th amendment in Roe v. Wade which found medical terminology for different trimesters of pregnancy.

NORC's tabulation of 180,000 ballots that did not register votes during initial machine counts Well, correct me if I'm wrong -- but I don't think I am -- but wouldn't that make them ILLEGAL VOTES according to Florida law?

Hmmm, since it is being released on a Monday I'll bet ya it's in Gore's favor otherwise a quiet Friday afternoon release would suffice.

They had to wait for those pregnant chads to give birth...then they could all be counted as 2 or more. Wonder how many birthed twins and triplets or quints, etc.?

I just want the lying clymers to tell me what standard was used: dimpled, hanging, pregnant, swinging, party line etc. they used to divine the voters' intent. Then I want a recount....

I suppose this is news in one way: It gives the lie to the liberals' claims that the recount was being "suppressed" by the Bush-loving media (?!).

The New York Times article should be a hoot though. They have their best propagandists(oops writers) working triple time.

I guess Sister Cleo was busy with other things and had to free up some time to work on this election again. ( and again, and again and again until the Demos get it "right".)
Get over it. You lost Al. Go home. Shut up. Please!

I'm from Buffalo, and if there is one thing I have learned, no matter how many times you rewind the tape, it doesn't change the call (wide right, no goal, forward lateral, etc.)

Well, correct me if I'm wrong -- but I don't think I am -- but wouldn't that make them ILLEGAL VOTES according to Florida law?Of course you're right but if you'll recall the Florida Supremes threw Florida law out the window along with Federal Code and the US Constitution.
But I see where you're coming from; they're illegal votes and don't matter one way or the other.

Are they still dragging that dead horse around? Amazing.
I read somewhere (maybe Capital Grilling?) that the 'scoop' is that Gore won by 600 votes or so. Though I don't believe for a NY sec, get ready for the lefties that run the media to try to make hay with it.

They can spin whay ever they want with hanging chads and dead people voting. Won't change a thing.
Bush Is President
Evidence of fraud in the 2000 Florida Presidential Election
The outcome of the 2000 U.S. Presidential election was reduced to the outcome of a very close vote count in the state of Florida - within hundreds of votes - between Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore.
Is George W. Bush a legitimate winner of the 2000 Presidential Election?
George Bush is the legitimate winner of the 2000 Presidential Election. Learn how Al Gore and the Democrat Party lawyers and officials tried to steal the 2000 Presidential election and almost got away with it. Learn how the Democrat Party machine worked feverishly to disenfranchise nearly 200,000 legal, legitimate Florida voters including thousands of military personnel, while claiming that "every vote must be counted" and that Bush and the Republicans were stealing the election.
Election fraud in seven Florida counties may have provided more than 1,400 fraudulent votes for Democrat presidential candidate Al Gore in the 2000 Presidential election, reducing George Bush's vote lead to a mere 300 votes after the second machine count. Furthermore, this fraud eliminates the possibility of any accurate vote recounts.
After completion of the first machine vote count, the Democrat Party officials knew that the election was close enough to be stolen using their standard procedures, and they knew exactly how many votes they needed to either add to Al Gore's count or subtract from George Bush's count.

This kind of recounting shouldn't be legal. How many states have ballots that didn't get counted because people don't properly? I know, I'm preaching to the choir hear. But just where did these 180,000 ballots come from, and why do people get access to count these things? This is simply a scheme of a few subversives and it should be quashed immediately.

Of course when they report that Gore really won, pubbies can always retort, "how many of those votes were cast by illegals, dead people, unregistered people and downright fraud. Frankly I don't care - Bush will remain president until his term ends. Maybe a little pressure will help him see his way to closing the boarders, not putting all of our at sea A/C Carriers in the Indian Ocean and revoking the visas of all middle eastern young men until after this undeclared war is over.
Frankly I am not impressed with his Homeland Security Cabinet Position, his EO that allows Clinton veto power on all papers that are released from the White House Archieves, and his revokation of the 4th ammendment under the guise of the "Patriot Act" anti-terrorism bill. Makes me think he's setting the stage to make war on the American People, or perhaps a future Clinton will use the act, which defines a terrorist as anyone who breaks any law that endangers human life, a terrorist.

Temporarily lost in the aftermath of Sept. 11, what could be one of the biggest news stories of the year is about to break. Right. Maybe bigger than September 11. Certainly bigger than the World Series. Dale Earnhardt Who? Way bigger than anthrax.

"what could be one of the biggest news stories of the year is about to break". I thought what you call a big story was something people actually care about.
