Lord Of The Rings star says Harry Potter is 'lightweight'

One of the stars of Lord Of The Rings has described the Harry Potter movie as "lightweight".

John Rhys-Davies says his fantasy film will win the box office battle between the two.

Rhys-Davies plays the heroic dwarf Gimli in the trilogy based on JRR Tolkien's books.

"I dread to say it, but I actually think, when the two films are looked at side by side, you'll see one has a texture and a depth and a moral dimension to it that will make Harry Potter look a little slight," he told the Daily Record.

"That's not a bad thing. I'm not being dismissive of Harry Potter. I think it will do well - but it's pretty lightweight stuff.

"Lord Of The Rings author JRR Tolkien is a considerable writer and, I think, a considerable thinker."

Well he's right, Harry Potter is lightweight when compared to LOTR but then again one is aimed at children and the other is aimed at adults. Comparing the two is apples and oranges; its kind of like comparing Day of the Jackal with SpyKids.

BTW almost everything that has come out of the fantasy genre in the last 40 years is derivative of LOTR or the Arthur mythos. That includes Harry Potter.

Yeah, I know. I feel the same about actors who go on about 'considerable thinkers'.

Hey, it's going to be a great day! We're ten posts into a Harry Potter thread and not one "Harry Potter is the anti-Christ" post.

He is the lightweight Anti-Christ!

I thought that was the Pope?

Maybe one of the 'thumpers' will clarify.

Yes, it might be worth doing a *ping-around* Not really necessary though because the first thing they do when they get up is type 'Harry Potter' into the search bar. Kinda makes their day...

If the film is no improvement over the book (as is likely to be the case); he's right; but that's because Rowling is utterly lightweight. But then, most fantasy is, compared to J.R.R.T.

I would venture a guess that Harry Potter is popular because it is written down to a literary level that enables the majority of ill-educated American children to read and understand it.

I'd be interested in a comparison of two groups of students on these two groups of books: publik skool and home-schooled students and their opinions on the Harry Potter series and the Tolkien series.

My personal Tolkien favorite is Unfinished Tales. Most excellent.

Possibly proving your point, I once started reading Unfinished Tales. It remained unfinished.
