This is just like the election crisis of 2000. During that time, this forum filled up with Bush supporters yelling about the recounts. Many joined local FR chapters to protest. Those chapters organized and planned protests and, guess what? Most times, no one showed up.
I know because I organized the Atlanta Area Chapter at that time. We had lot's of members, sure, but only five or six ever showed up for a "protest". The local Republican Party was much more effective in organizing Republican demonstrators. Freeper turnout was always a joke.
I see the same thing happening now. And that's really ironic since our man finally made it into the White House. And now here he is, on nationwide TV, our President, asking for Civil Defense volunteers, and how do FreeRepublic members react?
"...it's just another government program open to wastefulness and corruption..." says lowbridge. (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/fr/567647/posts)
Of course it is! What government program isn't? The difference here is that we have a chance to make it our very own "program open to wastefulness and corruption", since it is being proposed by OUR President. It's not some fat, lazy Democrat on some Congressional committee who is proposing this new program to win votes among slum housing residents. This is our President, asking for our support, during wartime!
Read between the lines of Bush's speech! He wants all of us angry white males with guns to join this new Civil Defense Force. Are we gonna sit back on our arses again like we did during the election debacle? Are we gonna let this initiative be highjacked by the Democrats so that the Civil Defense force ends up to be a bunch of grandmothers telling us the proper diet to eat so we are healthy when there's another anthrax attack?
Or are we going to do what we know Bush wants us to do? That is, are we going to get out there be vigilant regarding certain people from certain countries in order to let them know they are no longer welcome here. Are we going to get off of our arses to watch our own communities more closely than all of the police and National Guard put together ever could?
Nah, if experience is any guide, FreeRepublic members will only TALK about doing those things, while complaining loudly whenever the government proves incapable of being in every place at every moment to stop every terrorist attack.
Whoa, there buddy! Put your sheet back on the bed.
I once traveled with a bunch of Freepers from California to Washington DC for the first March for Justice rally in October of '98 because JimRob asked us to come. There were thousands of FReepers from all over the country that day and C-SPAN covered it. It was put together by Clinton's A Liar and others in only three weeks!!!
I can't tell you how many calls for action I have heeded when a fellow FReeper posted for others to write, phone or e-mail in regards to a cause. You're a no-nothing, IMHO. With your attitude, it's no wonder no one would follow your lead...
Jeers.
Cheers.

Additionally, my husband is a reserve police officer, I was a reserve and regular for several years. I think we could do militia work any time it is needed. It is a matter of timing. We can't just go running around the neighborhood with guns strapped on. When the time comes, there will be plenty of action and participation.
Bingo! FReepers are activists, not brown-shirts! Be vigilant and report suspicious behavior, but don't become vigilanties!!!
Cheers
Speak for yourself and put on your asbestos shorts.
OK, FReepers, fire away!
Maybe that has been his experience. If so, he either has very limited experience or unrealistically high expectations. Freepers have made many dents in many ways.
Should be the slogan of the Bush Brigaders. I was going to unleash a scathing comeback, but fear it would be lost on you. You're serious, aren't you?
The government may be a crook, but it's our crook now? Didn't Ron Silver say something similar at Clinton's first Inauguration looking up at the overflying jets. "They're ours now?"
I suppose you favor McCain's idea to increase the size of the so- called volunteer Americorps and SeniorCorps (I didn't know we had the latter) too, since it was bad when Clinton was president, but good now that Bush is president...
Right now, Bush and the so-called GOP in Congress are on an orgy of spending, regulation and reducing civil rights under the guise of combating terrorism that rivals anything the Democrats ever did...hell, the Dems are just trying to play catch up. Instead of disguising legislation as "For the children" now every bill, no matter what it is about, is named something like the "NEA Patriot Act of 2001", or the "Education through Security against Terrorism act of 2001."
No need for a federal Civil Defense Force. Get a cell phone, a digital camera, and a .357.

We had plenty of FReepers in Jacksonville, Florida out all day on the weekends,
as witnessed by this AP photo that ran front page on 400 newspapers nationwide
November 19, 2000! Almost a year ago!
That is much more than talk, my FRiend!
Norb in Jacksonville
I was at nearly every weekend anti-gore protest in West L.A. last year. We Freepers put our mouths into action. Speak for yourself!!
Also, I think that everyone is just waiting to see what sort of Civil Defense programs will be established.
I support community involvement for this; ever since 911 I have been waiting for this sort of leadership
from our President and he has come through, yet again.
While FR ain't perfect, they are too stupid to quit. LOL
Try green peace. I'm sure they will be receptive.
Nothing that ever made the news, unfortunately. Now that the wheel has turned, it's time to make the news. That's all I'm saying.
Strike while the iron is hot. The iron is not now. Bush just called for a Civil Defense force. Don't let it get hijacked by liberals.
Definitely! Last I heard, the Free Republic was not a militia group. I believe that Jim Robinson was accused of heading a militia at one time in a news article. As I recall, he wasn't very pleased by the label. Free Republic is a forum. We protest or report on suspicious behavior in ways unrelated to patrolling the streets with guns. No way did I read into President Bushes' speech that Americans should go out and harass people that we consider undesirable or suspicious. Be on the look-out and report, yes. But gun patrols? Give me a break...
Cheers--from Demnomo who does carry a gun and will use it, but only if I am dead certain that I or my family is being threatened.
