cnn cuts in with breaking news - Northern Alliance troops beginning offensive against Kabul. Heavy artillery fire throughout the live report. Roll on, N.A., with plausable deniability on Bush's part already on-record.
Strategery, bretheren.

O Glorious Taliban warriors, your names will be written in the heavens in fields of light by the Great and Powerful Allah, while the vultures pick clean the whitened bones of the American infidel...er, um, strike that, quick, everybody run like hell!

I don't think it's a stategy that Bush wants. He would prefer that they take Herat, and then Shindand, to give us another airfield, and then move to Kandahar. When that falls, Kabul will fall, like an overripe plum, into our hands. The death toll will be lower that way, and he may have time to get a coalition together.

If our planes are helping, NA is moving at our command. Since we control the sky, we control the war.
To: Excuse_Me
Given that the NA is totally dependent on our air support, I doubt if they're going to make a move without our say so.

I've got to ask, how could you have been listening to Khamaini's speech long enough to have gotten that breaking news bulletin?

I also suspect that we (US) are now or soon will be moving in from the South. We'll meet in Kabul.
To: Objective Reality
If we WANTED the NA to take Kabul, would we say so? Or wouldn't we put out this line like we have been to the effect that we really want them to hold off until we get a government in place, etc., etc. It is to our political advantage that the US and the NA not appear to be hand and glove.
Besides, give me a better scenario than securing Kabul for averting this wintertime humanitarian crisis that everyone is so worked up about?

Seriously, are there any reports of females removing their burkas and taking to the streets in Mazar .... ?

word that the plan might be to swamp the three front-line trenches and pause at the city gates. That's fine, too - I love a good siege. Hopefully the N.A. will get really "old school" and start catapulting plage-ridden corpses over the city walls. "Anthrax, eh, muddafuggas?"

I've got hopes for him, actually. Truthfully, I've got hopes for a lot of Iranians. They've had violent protests from college-age students demanding the right to Westernization, free speech / press / religion, etc., in recent months. They even had a large sympathy march after Sept. 11th. Also notice the way that Iran is _real_ low-key on this "war on Islam" rhetoric. That's promising.
To answer your question, though, I just left the TV on the channel while laptopping in bed.

Bush doesn't want the Northern Alliance to take all the marbles. The NA wants them. They will probably get them for all intents and purposes. With the Pushtan out of the picture, they will probably continue ongoing guerilla warfare. The place will probably continue to be a hell hole for the indefinite future. That is my guess.

Bumping ya Tonkin for the good news, and the NA were playing music in the last town they took over, and telling the women it was ok to come outside!
