Bush Seeks NY Plane Crash Details
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush met with advisers Monday seeking details of an American Airlines plane crash in New York.
A senior administration official said no threats against airplanes had been received and that the pilot of Flight 587 reported no trouble before the crash.
The official said the administration was considering suspending the takeoff of flights nationwide but there had been no decision.
Bush postponed a scheduled interview with Russian and American reporters so he could monitor the investigation into the crash of Flight 587, which had just taken off from John F. Kennedy International Airport en route to the Dominican Republic. He meets Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, opening three days of talks in Washington and Texas.
Intelligence agencies, the FBI and the Federal Aviation Administration were reviewing all recent intelligence for any signs that terrorism was involved but an hour after the crash there was no evidence pointing to an attack, said a U.S. official speaking only on condition of anonymity.
``They are comparing information to see if it provides any insight into what transpired. At this point, there's no indication of a terrorist attack, but it certainly can't be ruled out in current environment,'' the official said.

I feel like we are in good hands - folks who are taking things seriously.

I suspect there will be a lot of would-be travelers deplaning and cancelling travel plans until more is known.

Grounding flights because of a crash? I thought it was safe to fly. Geez, it's called living your life knowing you can die any minute. God does not promise us one day. Live life to the fullest. If I wanted to fly somewhere I'd fly. If I die, so be it.

I heard they closed and evacuated the Empire State Building. I guess they are not taking any chances.
To: RCW2001
I heard it reported that there HAD been problems before take off and the plane had been delayed before taking off.

There have been no planes in or out of our airport for several hours. It looks like they may have been grounded.

I thought Ari Fleisher said in his press conference this morning that no other airports were being closed except the four in NYC.

All Airports are closed. I am watching my local New York Station and the planes are flying so low over my house - they have been doing that since Sept 11th. I don't know why - they never used to fly so low. You can every their engines all the time. Westchester Airport is open but commercial airlines have voluntarily have suspended their flights until 2:00 this afternoon and American Airlines suspended their flights until 4:00. 1 Black box have been recovered and is on its way to Washington. Local New York Channel 4 just reported it.

Right on! Those who are afraid to die are also afraid to live.
Teddy Roosevelt summed it up in a speech entitled 'The Arena', "..........who at the worst if he failed, at least while daring greatly, so his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat". LETS ROLL!

They're now talking the possibility of the jet engine ingesting birds. AND, a top Amer. Airline spokesman just gave the maintenance records of the plane. He gave the TBO (time between overhaul) ratings of that model G.E. engine, and said one of the plane's engines had I think 9000+ hours on it--was very close to overhaul time. The other had much less time. I failed to catch whether the high-time engine was the one that fell off (or blew up, or whatever.)

According to American Airlines Nov 1 Timetable, Flight 587 New York JFK to Santa Domingo (SDQ) is scheduled to depart at 8:00am. Looks like it left about and hour late.

I'm in NC, with both major airports at least 45 minutes away. We have had two passenger jets fly very low over our home since 9/11. I've wondered what the deal is also. We've had military planes fly very low over us before, but never passenger aircraft.

Isn't that the strangest thing? I never was able to hear the engines before. I thought maybe it was just over New York. They must have re-routed everything since Sept 11th. I don't like the planes flying over the houses so closely.
