Taliban 'Quitting Kandahar'
SkyNews ^ | 12:12 UK, Tuesday November 13, 2001 GMT

There are reports the Taliban is fleeing its key city and spiritual stronghold of Kandahar.

The reports are unconfirmed, but if proved correct would be of enormous significance, effectively meaning the end of the Taliban as a ruling power.

Northern Alliance forces are continuing to push south, but it is not known how far they are from Kandahar.

The capture of the southern city would bring the Allies one step closer to achieving the main aim of the war - the defeat of the Taliban and the al Qaeda terrorist network, and the capture or death of Osama bin Laden.

However, analysts had expected the Taliban to stand and fight for Kandahar, rather than flee as they did with Kabul.

Thousands of anti-Taliban tribal fighters are advancing on the city through the Shorandab mountain range, after taking control of a nearby airport.

Witnesses said they had seen 5,000 fighters capture the airport, which is 20 miles away from the city. They said they could be in a position to threaten the city as early as this evening.

Looks like the NA are doing a superb job with the help of the US boys co-ordinating the air strikes.
The Taliban are virtually deafeated.

I just wish I could ask these stupid reporters one question:

How do you defend a piece of territory by standing in one place and catching 500 pounders????????

We really need somebody to rat him out...NOW.

The Taliban are virtually deafeated.

The Taliban are not defeated until their soldiers are dead.

We are an instant gratification society. If their army just hides in caves and offers minimal resistance we will eventually get bored and leave.

There would then be hell to pay for whom ever is running the country.

We need to destroy the army before we claim victory.

They are capturing territory, not the force behind the terrorism, which should be the US goal. I would rather have a battle in which we capture or eliminate a large number of the oposition.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the Afghans found the foriegn-based Taliban was a paper tiger. All this time, they endured beatings and killings and degradation for nothing.

The religion they thought would save them, ended up enslaving them.

"The reports are unconfirmed, but if proved correct would be of enormous significance, effectively meaning the end of the Taliban as a ruling power."

"The Taliban are virtually deafeated."

Honestly, it is not my attempt to rain on your parade, but the two statements are not absolutely compatible. The retreat of the Taliban suggests to this old war horse that Bin Laden and the Army he commands are going to take to the hills and wage a guerilla war for quite sometime. It is the manner in which they defeated the Soviets and how we were ultimately defeated in Viet Nam.

The battle is going to long and we are going to take casualties along the way. We shouldn't get too cocky at this stage of the war.

It sure appears to me that contrary to the "news" reports that the "Taliban are fleeing", or the "Taliban are Quitting" the core of that movement are engaged in an organized retreat and are in no sense of the word defeated.

There have been reports of many thousands captured after the Mazar-e-Sharif battle. I bet those fleeing Kabul yesterday didn't make it far either. I think what is happening is that Afghanistan is being made unsafe for terrorists to train and operate. We will try to install a legitimate government, throw them several billion dollars and try to build a decent country in one of the worst places on earth. That's my guess. Also not sure how badly we want to capture Osama right now. If we get him, then the pressure will be on to stop before we take out Saddam.

I wonder where they are fleeing to? Perhaps regrouping for a counter attack? Then there's the matter of OBL and the entire network in other countries. We are just beginning and much hard work lies ahead.......but lookin' good, Mr. Cartah!

Wait. This cannot be true. The Taliban and Al-Quaida will gladly die in battle. 70 some odd virgins are waiting. This just cannot be true. These are seasoned fighters ready to spill their blood.

Let's give credit. The tallies became a 'paper tiger' in the face of the USAF the USN in effect becoming the Northern Alliance air force, and the SpecOps spotting targets.

Bush and company have run this war brilliantly. Bubba would still be lobbing Tomahawks.

I concur, but I would add that those who have been near the receiving end of our bombing campaign definitely have had their world 'rocked'. During Operation Desert Storm, many of the Iraqis that surrendered were visibly shaking days after they entered the P.O.W. sites.

I'm sure they all have severe PTSD.
