Widow, 93, is told a male home help must bathe her [He has a 'right' to bathe women!]

A WIDOW of 93 may lose her home help visits unless she agrees to let a man bathe her instead of her usual female carer.

Una Penny, who lives in sheltered accommodation in Thornbury, Glos, has received daily visits for more than a year from a female carer, who helps her shower and wash her hair. However, South Gloucestershire council recently informed her that a man was replacing the carer. Mrs Penny objected and the service has now stopped.

Her son-in-law, David Dunn, a retired head teacher, said his wife was told by social services that the council's legal department had warned that if Mrs Penny refused a male carer "it would infringe his rights under the European Charter".

He added: "This week, the social services rang to say that if she continued to refuse, her care needs would have to be reassessed and a component of that would include a psychiatric assessment to determine if she has any problems about men. My mother-in-law does not want a stranger bathing her. It is totally unthinkable."

Mrs Penny said: "I said I did not want a male carer. But they told me that I would get used to it. I think that is monstrous."

The council said it was working with Mrs Penny to try to resolve the dispute. It said: "Due to a change in the way our contracts work, the only carer available to Mrs Penny was a male. But now she has expressed a preference for a female we are working hard to see if we can provide one for her."

A council spokesman had no knowledge of suggestions that Mrs Penny would be infringing the male helper's rights, or that a psychiatrist would assess her.

Perhaps these IDIOTS can (with help) grasp the concept of modesty; perhaps not.

The European Charter? What the Hell is that? Hope it's not coming to the USA in any way, shape, or form.

This poor woman. A psychiatric assessment???? Give me a break. Good thing we won the revolution.

The only man I would allow to bathe me is my husband. LOL!

It's already here in the form of political correctness, the ACLU, the university professors, etc. It's insanity and lack of common sense gone mad.

I took care of my father during his Alzheimer's disease and bathed him at home as long as we could keep him at home, but my mom had to go into the hospital, the nursing home and then assisted living. There was no way that I would have bathed my mother. Enough was enough.

Hope you have a female GYN. I hear those folks don't give a whit about your modesty.

You forget co-ed bathrooms in many (most?) college dorms.

Modest young women have to 'share' with the football team.

Poor woman!! I remember while working at the Mental Hosptal, that men were recently allowed to work on the womens ward...but not allowed in the showers. This was the State of NY's mental health laws ....a few years ago anyway. So whats so different here!!! NOTHING!

With typical Southern succinctness, you've summed the whole situation up in three words.

You can usually have a female nurse in the examining room if you have a male gyn. Is there going to be a female nurse in the bathroom with the poor, aggrieved male aide?

I work in a juvenile (13 to 20) detention facility (male) and the female officers there have the same responsibilities as do the male officers....when it's shower time they (females) are allowed to supervise the boys taking their showers....no big deal

hope it is not coming to the united states in any way, shape or form

remember the equal rights amendment that almost was ratified back in the mid to late 1970s? if it had been ratified, per the yale law journal (don't ask me which issue, i cannot remember that far back) this situation would have played out in the united states.

I wouldn't have a female GYN. You're right about them (with rare exception). I've only had one examine me before and she was an insensitive bi*ch. My current GYN is has 5 grown children, hugs me every time he sees me and is very fatherly, sympathetic, and put a cold washcloth on my forehead and held my hand one time when I felt faint. He spoils me rotten, in other words! He's the only male in the world, besides my husband and my childhood doctor, who I'd let bathe me.

I think it's a law that a female nurse be present when a male GYN does a pelvic. I'm pretty sure it is in NC. I think a female cop at least has to be present if a female is being frisked, if not actually doing the frisking herself.

What a bunch of idiotic dopes these people are, taking political correctness to the extreme and ignoring all reason and the sense of propriety of 93 year old ladies!

If I were the aide, I'd insist on one....about 25 yrs old and Swedish...to take the edge off bathing Granny.

Why doesn't she (or better yet, her retired son-in-law) just hire a person of whichever sex she likes to bathe her?

Oh, that's right, because that would go against glorious socialism-- the arrangement which created a ridiculous surreal situation such as the "South Gloucestershire council" contacting an old woman and "informing" her who would be bathing her, in the first place.

And we can't have that. Socialism must be preserved, above all else.

It's utopia.

I should have such good luck when I get old.

But this is not about an old guy who loves a sponge bath from a young woman.

This is about a 93 year-old woman who deserves some modesty if she wants same.

However, it is a big deal to a 93 year old woman, and for that reason alone, her wishes should be respected. Screw justifying it...she (or anyone else) should never have to justify modesty.

Period
