The only way to the White House is through the South, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee said while on campus Thursday.
More than 60 people gathered in the upper chamber of Phi Kappa Hall to hear Terry McAuliffe speak at a rally sponsored by the UGA Young Democrats.
His speech was titled "Taking Back the South," a sentiment Young Democrats officers said was McAuliffe's goal when he accepted the chairman position.
"His objective when he became chairman was to regain Southern seats, and while doing that, to try and highlight what Democrats have accomplished in the South," said Mara Gassman, Young Democrats president.
McAuliffe said, "Last Tuesday (election day), we had, percentage-wise, the greatest night in Democratic history. I'm having the time of my life."
But Thursday, McAuliffe was quick to say no votes could be taken for granted in the 2004 presidential election.
McAuliffe said he has been focusing on Hispanic and women's issues. He also said the Democratic Party must return to home-grown political strategies.
"We've got to take this party back to the grassroots, get people energized," he said.
Before his speech, McAuliffe met outside Phi Kappa with several College Republicans who peacefully protested the rally.
"I had them take their picture with me," he said.
One of them, Jared Thomas, a senior from Alpharetta, said the College Republicans welcomed the chairman to campus.
"We just want to let him know the values of the Democratic party are out of touch with the values of the South," he said.
The rally ended with a battle cry from McAuliffe.
"In 2004 we show ol' George Bush the door, and then I get to retire," he said.

He should be shown the door - before he has a chance to retire.

Dust off Senator Byrd's Klan hood and have him do some stumping for ya, Terry.

Memo to McAuliffe: You don't win back Good Ol'Boys by cozying up with militant lesbo feminazis, abortionists, and sideshow freak homosexuals.

Umm... Democrat accomplishments in the South... Oh I know a few. How about artificially prolonging slavery and leading the nation into a fratricidal war? That brought great benefits to the region....
To: Clara Lou
Have you noticed how the Dems are speaking only on campuses? They know they would be booed anywhere else but they still get there message across via the media. Clever.

Maybe Terry could treat us Southerners to a night's stay in the Clinton's house in the predominantly-white neighborhoods or take us for a round of golf in Obubba Been Laiden's favorite, exclusively-white, country clubs.

Heeee Hawww! Good ol' Upper West Side country boy Terry McCauliffe does his best hillbilly imitation, complete with twangin' banjos and hillbilly still.
Bravo, Terry. Your white-face minstrel show will make them simple rednecks forget about all those "extra-chromosome" cracks.

Southern schools are different though: the other day we had a Veteran's Day dedication on campus and there were NO(!) peace pansies out there protesting! We have our 60s hippie wannabes on campus but they are usually too busy getting high on the paints in the art department.

Sounds as delusional as Mullah Omar's "strategic" withdrawl from most of Aghanistan.

Is he still allowing his own children to drink the water which he claims has arsenic? Is he still driving a gas guzzler? Is he still spewing crap?
Yes to all three.

McAuliffe says it's time to 'take back the South' Go ahead Terry start off by humping for gun control, abortion on demand, open borders, no school prayer, no Battle Flags and affirmitive action. Use Naomi Woif as your fashion co-ordinator, let the NY Times write your party platform and let Hollywood write campaign ads that tell Southerners what America is really about.
Those pesky red areas on the 2000 election map will not go away.

LOL!!! You know the Dims are desperate when the come knocking on the doors of us evil, straight, white male Southerners!! I guess Albore losing Arkansas AND Tennessee hit them pretty hard!
The funny part, in '04, will be when they trot out that perpetually menstrual b*tch Presidential candidate, who claims to be a New Yawker, yet can't even manage to go to one baseball game for fear of being booed!!!

Come and take this, Terry.

The only way Comrade McAuliffe will take back the South is at gunpoint.
