GUARDIAN OF HONOR REQUEST
October 18, 2001 | Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan

Posted on 11/24/2001, 7:19:59 PM by LoneGreenEyeshade

This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan.
The following is his request.
“Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can?"

LETTER FROM SANTA
Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2001

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES
AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
"SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS."

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."

How about if we all call The USO and find out how we can send our love and God Blesses to our"Defenders of Freedom"??

FROM THE USO WEBSITE:

"100% of individual donations received for the USO Fund for Freedom's Finest will go to support our vital programs and services for America's men and women in uniform and their families.

In these times of National crisis, the USO supports its troops, its communities, and its country…The great intangible of America's wars beyond logistics, beyond strategy, beyond wonder weapons and Generals, is the spiritual force of its fighting men and women -- and that is the force that the USO magnificently serves.

This great Nation has historically enjoyed a long period of peace. However, it is now being challenged with a new war on terrorism. For more than 60 years, the USO has been there to support our Armed Forces, never forgetting them, even after the guns have fallen silent. The demand for USO services has steadily increased since September 11th, particularly in the more remote and hostile locations where our military is deploying. The USO has expanded its already broad spectrum of programs to ensure that virtually every member in our U.S. Armed Forces benefits from its critical services.

And the USO will be there for the families left behind. USO centers - - staffed primarily with volunteers - - provide a wide range of nurturing programs and opportunities for communication between loved ones.

In a response to this need, the USO has implemented the Fund for Freedom's Finest, a campaign that is focusing its efforts on raising funds to expand programs and hours of operation. The following services are illustrative of those that are taken to our men and women in uniform.

For more information, or to donate online, please visit the USO web-site at www.uso.org. Donations are also being accepted at 1-800-USO-SHOW (876-7469)."

This is not a dig, however this was not written by a Marine. Heaven forbid that Marines would use use the word soldier to describe themselves. The first time I read this was way back in 1990 when it was attributed to a soldier. Best wishes to all those on active duty, in the Guard and reserve.

Thanks. I did not know the source for certain. Just passing it on as I received it. And I very much appreciate the fact that you are tactful and did not beat me up!!!!

For myself, I find it easy to forget how fortunate I am so I posted this thread to do something, as small as it may be, to say "thanks." And to any Marine, please no offense intended!
