Regarding attacking people's opinions who are civilians...
me

Posted on 11/24/2001 8:58:03 PM PST by jtcribbs

Okay, I'm back...I started a heated thread earlier in which I stated my disgust for Lt. Shane Osborne and received countless responses attacking me for never serving, not knowing situation SOP's, etc, etc.

I just want to respond to a few things that annoyed me.

Number one, people who are civilians and have never served in the military have the right to express their disgust and may have legitimate points, all for one very good reason: Namely, we are TAXED by the very agency of force which we may question. WE HAVE ALREADY GIVEN.

They take from us, they have to do their explaining to us. End of story.

I don't have to explain my reasons for never having served, YET. If you were a high school grad of 1992, military service was THE LAST thing most people viewed as something good to serve themselves or serve their country. There was no apparent threat. And don't give me B.S. that you knew. You and I had no clue, so sit down and shut the hell up. We're going to be killing millions of Muslims in short time, and it will require ALL of our help, so you won't have to wonder about me.

Number two, I tend to follow the view of Col. David Hackworth. Especially like in this article: http://www.hackworth.com/19nov01.html

We have developed too much of a technophile military and society which can't stand the sight of blood, and which barely understands the meaning of being a warrior. That's where I'm coming from in regards to Osborne...The much quoted line by Patton of "making the enemy die for his country" doesn't mean you try to keep yourself alive and save your ass, it means YOU WILL KILL THE MOTHERF--KER for certain. But this is lost on most people, even here in on FR.

Number three, I can't stand when people weigh lives and material against principle. That is the most pragmatic, '90s, Clintonian, B.S. view of things. It is appalling! The principle is we do not give our secrets away to other countries, especially one which is often acting against us. Not one! I mean this one DID act against us, its plane hit ours! And then Osborne proceeded to hand them the plane...it's ridiculous.

Number four, I am a Republican for crying out loud and don't ever call me a Commie you SOBs!

You're entitled to your opionion.

Have you read the accounts of the incident?

The plane was inverted and Osborne brought it back, all members of the crew are home and alive.

Sounds like he did his job to me.

"...which barely understands the meaning of being a warrior..."

Give us a short paragraph on the meaning of being a warrior.

That's just it, people in the military KNOW what they are getting into, you as their leader do not need to protect them. Lead them. That is the point.

you have a right to your opinion, others have a right to call you a fool for expressing it.

Being a warrior means you do everything in your power to kill the enemy, and maintain the safety of those you are defending.

The safety of your fellow warrior doesn't factor into the equation. They have the same duty as you.

"That's just it, people in the military KNOW what they are getting into, you as their leader do not need to protect them..."

It is your sacred duty to protect them.

Do you have a brother--would you say the same about the worth of your brother's life ?

"...The safety of your fellow warrior doesn't factor into the equation..."

Then your safety would not factor into theirs.

"You don't think kamikaze would ever be justified?"

You avoided the question of whether you would be a good one.

Exactly. But as a warrior, your safety shouldn't really concern you. I mean, do you think NY fire fighters thought of their own safety in the WTC?
