I was surprised at my reaction to Security Forces at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

I took my som and my Girlfriend to the Visitor Center at Kennedy Space Center yesterday. Now I am quite aware of hightened scurity at Military bases and Airports and such. But I was still surprised at my reation. After getting our tickets to get in we were met by a row of metal detectors just like you would see at the County Courthouse. Every person was scanned and the wand was used if the bady scanner went off. Every one of the security people was armed. Ok, I can go along with that I suppose. Security is much more on everyone minds lately. What got me though was the guys walking around with the MP5's all over the place.

I mean, this IS a major tourist attraction! And here they are walking around with Submachine guns..........  Needless to say this did get me to thinking. I don't travel much anymore and I haven't been to a tourist attraction, "Trap", in years. So is this now the norm in America was this just a special case because of where it is?

So my questions to all of you are these:

1. How would you feel about going to a fun family attraction and having the security guards armed for a small war all around you?

2. Do you think that this is going to become the "norm" here in America?

3. Is security this tight at any other family attractions where you go or might want to go?

Tell you what friend, if you're like me you'll simply refuse to frequent an establishment that has machine guns and tanks at it's entrance. I don't give a hang if it's an airport or a restaurant

We have theatre chains out here that are going to start searches before you can enter. They won't see a dime of my money. I will NOT sit idly by and watch this nation turned into Nazi Germany. My dollars will not support such establishments.

Folks, this is insanity. Not one single theatre in this nation has been the victim of terrorism. And if our governemnt agencies had been doing their jobs, 09/11 wouldn't have happened.

We are being manipulated. Once again the citizens of this nation must pay for incompetance at the top. Our federal agencies were warned that such attacks were likely. In reaction they didn't even think to have aircraft ready to respond to such attacks. What part of part of this does anyone fail to realize?

With STS-108 scheduled on the 29th, you are suprised they have a lot of security? I am suprised the visitors center is open.

Imagine what would happen if a visitor got near the shuttle.

How did I like the Center? Hmmm, mixed emotions here mostly.
I think we should be MUCH further along than we are for the
amount of money, talent and time we have used up.

But on the other hand the presentation of history and the hope for the
future was well done. I would give the Visitor Center a B+ or A-.
It was worth going to. And Something that I do feel needs to be said
over and over again. The Visitor Center is totally self sufficient.
There are NO taxpayer dollars used in supporting it at all.

And in response to someone else's question. The Center is Remotely
sited from the day to day workings of the rest of KSC. All of the tours that
used to go to working building have been terminated. So the amount of
security did seem to me to be excessive. But that is indeed a personal observation.

Right here on this thread you see the problem. Everyone is now clammoring for more secruity. "Hey put an uzzi out my front door if you want to. Hey sure I'll open my doors for inspection any time you want, just tell me when. Hey sure, just set up road blocks all over, I'm all for it."

Just let terroism occur, then watch the masses surrender every tenet of the Constitition. Heavens! What lemmings!

The movie theater is being pro-active. If you will recall, before 9/11 not one plane had ever crashed into the World Trade Center, either.

If enough people don't go the movies, then they will find a different method to make the theaters secure. If most people don't mind, then they will keep searching and you will have to rent your movies. That is the free market.

I am afraid that for myself, in situations with large crowds, such as theaters, I would prefer that there be heightened security. It doesn't bother me. If it bothers you, then of course don't go.

No, but the patrons have.  Bought a Coke and large buttered popcorn lately?

That's a tough arguement to refute. I'm still thinking... (grin)

Miss Marple, if you look back at this nation's history, you'll note a number of other times when bombings took place. You'll not a number of other times when acts of terrorism took place. Please do not be cowered into accepting a police state.

If I have to be the first one to die by and act of terrorism, I'd rather have that be so than for all my fellow citizens to live in a police state.

If we are going to accept machine guns and tanks as a common way of life, what the hell type of nation will we have left anyway?

Those tanks and machine guns are only the visible portion of things. Invaded privacy, the abolition of second amendment rights and other violations of the constitution are going right along with them. Please to do sign on to this.

We are being turned into a police state step by step. Help to stop it. Don't support it.

A few years ago on various internet boards there were discussions about whether the US was under "martial law" (or, as people would often write, "marshall law"). The counter to that notion was that we weren't under martial law because there were no troops guarding facilities, no tanks in the streets, and no declaration of martial law.

Well, the tanks aren't in the streets just yet -- though there was one, apparently, welcoming people to Miami's international airport. The troops are in the airports and in more and more facilities of all kinds. Putting troops and tanks in the streets and setting up checkpoints on roads leading into and out of cities would not now seem all that far-fetched, like it did a few years ago, would it?

No it wouldn't. And I am shocked at the people who actually think this is a great idea.

What type of a nation are we going to turn over to our children? This really is getting out of hand.

I wouldn't mind all the security, if it was accompanied by a committment to enforce the Second Amendment, i.e., if normal citizens were encourarged to K & B, emphasis on the B.

Thank you for your observations.

I feel NASA needs to do more than inspire and catalogue what was, they need to fly missions that get us somewhere.

Oh, I can't believe that you're spreading disinformation like this! I mean, of all the places to put out lies like you did...we're supposed to be talking truth here, and you come out with huge lies about the movie industry! What, are you a shill for Regal or something like that? You know what I'm talking about...when you wrote large buttered popcorn.

You tell me where you're getting real butter on popcorn, instead of this oil based, never-been-near-a-cow stuff they're trying to pass as real butter.

heh heh heh heh heh
