With a reported sighting of Osama bin Laden in south-eastern Afghanistan in the past few days, the campaign to find him has extended to DNA science.
United States officials in Saudi Arabia are trying to obtain DNA samples from his relatives to help identify any remains, if bin Laden dies fighting.
Time magazine says US diplomats are trying to persuade bin Laden's relatives to give samples. Most of his family is in Saudi Arabia and the FBI would ideally like a sample from his mother but would have to get the Saudi authorities to help them.
Bin Laden was last reported to be in a camp 50 kilometres from Jalalabad.
A man identified as a government minister claimed the al-Qaeda leader was seen in a large fortified encampment. He said informants assured him that bin Laden was seen near Tora Bora, a village where two valleys meet in the mountains of Nangarhar province.
There is a large network of caves near Tora Bora where Afghan fighters hid when they were at war with the Soviet Union in the 1980s. The area contains bunkers and ammunition depots and is not far from the Pakistan border. Some of the caves are well fortified and have their own heating and ventilation systems, which were paid for covertly by the US when it was helping the Afghans against the Russians.
Commanders of the eastern shura, or council, which claims to control three big provinces in eastern Afghanistan, said representatives of al-Qaeda paid the villagers of Tora Bora to leave the village some weeks ago. They claim that as many as 2000 foreign fighters, called Afghan Arabs, have dug in at Tora Bora with rifles, machine-guns and missiles.

The House of Saud better start toeing a little line around here. We could topple them in about ten seconds, merely by walking away.
