Fox News is reporting that Marine helicopter Cobra Gunships are presently attacking an armored column approaching their new airbase near Kandahar. Surely the Talibunnies aren't dump enough to isolate themselve out in the open like that.

I heard this also but haven't found anything on the few wire services, but now Shuster is reporting this as coming from a pool reporter with the unit I think!
I'll just throw this in:
While not technically a "special operations force," the Marines advertise their Expeditionary Units as "special operations capable." These units -- at least two of which are in the Indian Ocean -- are capable of quick, compact, multi-faceted military campaigns.
These units generally have more equipment, logistical and technical support, weaponry and marines than their conventional counterparts, giving them more firepower. Their purpose is to provide the commander-in-chief an operational maneuver capability from the sea.
Commanded by a colonel, one Marine Expeditionary Unit typically includes about 2,200 personnel. The infantry battalion uses amphibious assault and light-armored vehicles, and the aviation unit employs helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft such as "Harrier" jets.

A slight change in wording was just made by Fox News. They changed 'approaching' to 'near'.

Cobras? I thought all services were moving to the Apache? Maybe just the Army?
Any other details would be appreciated. I am sure there will be much TACAIR converging on this column.

I thought all services were moving to the Apache? I believe the corps stuck with the Cobra- upgunned/engined, capable of firing hellfire, etc.

All your armored vehicles belong.....oh well just blew them up.

As far as I know, the Marines have no Apache's in their inventory. The USMC operates late models of the venerable Cobra attack helicopter. These craft have been given more powerful turbine engines, heavier armament and more sophisticated avionics.
