Interviews Expected To Begin Soon Posted: 4:04 p.m. EST November 26, 2001 Updated: 4:31 p.m. EST November 26, 2001 DETROIT-- Federal authorities plan to begin interviewing nearly 1,000 men of Middle Eastern descent as soon as possible, as part of the ongoing terrorist investigation, U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Collins said Monday. Collins said that investigators will try to conduct the interviews in the "least intrusive manner" possible and that agents would cease questioning the men if they chose not to answer questions during the process. U.S. Attorney Talks About Interview Process Letters were sent to 870 people who may have information regarding the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks or terrorist activities. Authorities are not calling those whom it sent letters to suspects, Local 4 reported. "We have no reason to believe that you are, in any way, associated with terrorist activities," the letter states. "Nevertheless, you may know something that could be helpful in our efforts. In fact, it is quite possible that you have information that may seem irrelevant to you but which may help us piece together this puzzle." Collins said that about 560 of those letters went to Middle Eastern people in eastern Michigan communities, including 200 in Dearborn, as many as 80 in Ann Arbor, 78 in Oakland County and 53 in Detroit. The metro Detroit area has about 300,000 Arab-Americans, the heaviest concentration outside of the Middle East, according to the Arab-American Institute. About 50,000 Arabs live in other parts of the state. Interview participants will be allowed to have an attorney present, and interpreters will be available if needed, authorities said. Federal agents and local law enforcement officials will conduct the interviews, Collins said. The interviews are part of a nationwide effort to contact more than 5,000 visitors from Middle Eastern countries and determine if they have been recruited by Osama bin Laden's terrorist organization, al-Qaida. Officials plan to ask the 18- to 33-year-olds, who have been in the United States on nonimmigrant, tourist, business, or student visas since Jan. 1, 2000, to participate in voluntary interviews. "The interviews are designed to assist law enforcement efforts, to learn more about those who support or promote terrorism," said Collins, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan.

They're just going to let these people walk away if they refuse to answer questions? Gimme a break.

I'm not sure what the intent is, but the article says they will cease to question them, not that they will allow them to walk away. I suppose any here illegally or on expired visas will be detained and/or deported. If any of them are legal residents, with no probable cause or evidence of criminal behavior, they must be allowed to walk. But, I strongly suspect they will spend the rest of their days with some new friends following them everywhere they go.

Well of course they'll cease questioning the men if they choose not to answer the questions. They just left out the part about how the investigators would, at that point, commence to working the subject with a sock full of quarters until he decides to resume answering questions.

These people obviously don't want to tell what they know, they didn't come forward with any information before Sept 11, they haven't volunteered any even still, so asking them nicely doesn't seem to be too logical.

Subtlety, thy name is W. LOL!

Here's the deal: the letter is non-threatening. If they don't show up to answer questions, they will be tailed immediately. If they come in and refuse to answer a question, they will be followed in perpetuity. If they do answer questions, we have some information.

This is a delicate way of hinting, very strongly, that they had better answer.

Yes, that does seem to be it! Very clever because how can they object? I liked this part:

"We have no reason to believe that you are, in any way, associated with terrorist activities," the letter states. "Nevertheless, you may know something that could be helpful in our efforts. In fact, it is quite possible that you have information that may seem irrelevant to you but which may help us piece together this puzzle."

Exactly. I was watching the news last night (Detroit station) and they interviewed a M.E. student attending a local university, asked him about his reaction to the letter. The student said he plans NOT to respond, and then whined about his rights being violated, etc.. The reporter asked him if he knew anyone or anything that could be connected with the September 11 attack. The student got a big grin on his face and said "no, of course not" (chuckle, chuckle). I couldn't believe it. For someone here on a temporary visa, as a "guest", I would have hoped he would be a lot less arrogant and a heck more grateful that he hasn't been deported.

I think we should do some serious questioning of where the money is coming from to pay the tuition, room & board of all these "students". These "students" are often past 30, don't seem to ever have been employed and have money to attend universities, drive cars, and to travel. I think it's time to see who is funding them and why.

What's next? Internment camps?

This should be pretty simple. If they refuse to answer questions, throw their asses in jail for obstruction of justice.

That's what would happen to you and I, so why are these towelheads getting "special" rights that you and I don't have?

Hmmm ... must be that "patriot" act. They only jail patriots now.

This war is lost ...

Investigate? Why waste the time and money? If we already know the above, put 'em on a leaky boat back for home, and tell them they'll be shot if they jump ship and try returning to our shores.

We *know* what they were here for!

Yes. Followed by a leaky boat ride back home. And that's exactly as it should be, for these terrorists in training.

Or would you rather we just shot them and got it over with?

Yes you're right, it would be better to send them all back home where it'd be a little harder for them to carry out Saddam Hussein's orders. I think like someone else suggested, take them in for questioning, if they won't answer anything, then release them saying they were released because they cooperated fully with the FBI and answered many questions.

Hmmm .... you may have something here.

Release them and say they cooperated fully. That's mean Fred. That's like a delayed death sentence. They know they're gonna die, just not when, nor who's gonna turn on 'em and do it.

I like it.

Better yet, once we release 'em, we can put them under video surveillance, and start a new "Survivor" tv series with them.

We'll use the casino's in Vegas to project an over/under on the number of days that terrorist-in-training will survive, and place bets on it.

The government will naturally tax the winnings just like any casino bet, and we can use that money to help fund the war on terrorism.

Oh, how patriotic it'd be! I can see the flags waving now! And the joyous video shot of the winner collecting their money after successfully guessing the date & time of this terrorist-in-training's death would be broadcast around the world, just like that toothless palestinian b*tch who flitted her tongue when the WTC was attacked!

Oh, it's a beautiful vision!!

Where's my coffee, dammit?!
