To send an online message to any service member, go to www.anyservicemember.org.
A new Web site provides an alternative for Americans who want to send holiday wishes to deployed members of the armed services.
The Defense Department suspended two holiday mail programs for deployed military to shield them from possible exposure to anthrax. The "Any Service Member" and "Operation Dear Abby" mail programs were suspended Oct. 30.
The new Web site, www.anyservicemember.org, functions as an electronic mail room of sorts for military members anywhere and people who want to write to them.
"This site is about providing a way for people to continue the tradition of 'Any Service Member' mail," says its founder, Jack Coffey of Atlanta, a public affairs specialist for the U.S. Army Forces Command. "It's an opportunity, if you will, to let America's military know how much you appreciate what they do on your behalf 24 hours a day."
The rules for the site are simple: Don't post any information that could jeopardize the mission or safety of anyone deployed; no bashing of ethnic groups, religions, or the U.S.; and enjoy the site and come back often.
