Happy 50th Birthday BUFF
www.Foxnews.com | 29 Novermber 2001 | Trueblackman

Posted on 11/29/2001 11:11:53 AM PST by Trueblackman

He is loved by some hated by many but respected by all!!! He is 50 years old and still kicks ass when he needs to...Who is he??? He is the heavy weight in his class at a mindblowning 390,000lbs with a wingspan of 185 feet eight engines a crew of five who can cruise at 650 mph at 50,000 feet or at 200 feet...who is he??? He is "The B-52" and today is his birthday but like any good conservative and hard charger he is off working today answering his nation's call to action to fight Terroism. Today in 1951 the first protype rolled off the line at Boeing south Seattle Plant. Even with The B-52's great age The Air Force has plans to retain him on active service it until 2040. No he is not as stealthy as The B-2 and half as fast as The B-1 at full speed The but he is a proven mud mover/anti-shipping/photographic reconnaissance platform with a long record and the only job he has never proformed is the one he was designed to do back in 1951 and that was to carry and drop nuclear weapons in time of war.

Not to pick nits with Fox news, but I assume they are talking about the (original) B-1 bomber, which we dont fly (we fly the subsonic B-1b). ..

The B-1B is capable of supersonic flight and is capable of speeds of 1400 mph!

The BUFFs from Barksdale used to be the "Red Force" when we had wargames. It was quite a site to see three of these big slow monsters coming over the tree-line at 500 feet for a low level bomb run and realizing that if it had been for real that most of use would have been blown to pieces.

I'm glad they're on our side.

When/where is the party? Are we invited? Or are they just going to deliver some "presents"?

Happy birthday BUFF!

From the official Air Force site on the B-1B here

Speed: 900-plus mph (Mach 1.2 at sea level)

I was stationed at Dyess AFB, TX on 1 October 86 when the B-1B went on its first nuclear alert. No way that a Lancer with a full fuel load and sixteen weapons could break Mach 1.

My son is a B-1 weapons officer. They can outrun F-16's because they can stay in afterburner longer. Weapons or not.

LOL, Trueblackman, husband flew B-52 G models out of Loring AFB 1979-1983.

He was a "bomber puke" flying a "BUFF" (Big Ugly Flying F***er--LOL). Bomber Pukes always thought they were better than "Tanker Toads" (KC-135 tanker pilots).

The BUFFS were rusty and ancient even back then. They always reminded me of giant buzzards hovering in the sky, spewing huge clouds of black smoke. They are SCARY-looking aircraft. Hope they're freaking the cr@p out of the Taliban.
