Zero tolerance (Gun Control)
St. Louis Post-Dispatch ^ | 12-1-01 | Editorial

Edited on 05/11/2004 10:57:10 AM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

AT a time when the nation is spending billions and skirting normal law enforcement procedures to increase domestic security, it makes less sense than ever to allow the sale of military-style weapons.

President George W. Bush should extend the federal ban that expires in 2004. It was a good idea before Sept. 11. It is non-negotiable now.

I think there have been a few other articles/editorials posted lately of a very similar nature, and folks have suspicioned that a new legislative push is coming (McCain?). To the Post-Dispatch and their ilk, gun-control is "non-negotiable". I have never written a letter-to-the-editor before, but this one has inspired me to have a go at it. I have about fifty second amendment/gun control threads from FR saved, so I probably have enough "ammunition", but friendly advice and pointers are always appreciated.

There's a bunch of counter-points that can be made (such as the fact that criminals don't obey the law, so this would only affect those that abide the law to begin with, and that it's not up to the editor to determine the proper firearm for a hunt. That should be left up to the hunter). Why don't you type up a rough draft of your thoughts and we can help flesh it out?

Ask this idiot who wrote this ... "where is the outcry about box cutters?" Tell him that the most tragic mass murder event in America's recent history (9/11) was accomplished with boxcutter knives not handguns or assault rifles!

Tell him that the courts have already ruled that it is not the job of the police to protect private citizens! Tell him that gun contol is proven the single most abysmal failure historically in preventing crime! Ask him that "if he doesn't have enough spine to protect himself, how can he expect the overworked and underpaid cop shop to do it?"

It's amazing what one has to believe to believe in gun control

Thanks for the help & encouragement. One of the odd things about this editorial is that the urgent need to close the gun show "loophole" is justified by bringing up two cases that do not involve U.S. terrorism.

Not one person who was murdered by the terrorists on 9/11 was killed with a gun.

"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."

Whether the threat come from a foreign state or from a domestic tyrant, it's clear that the Constitution expects that the people will fight for their freedom with Arms. What do modern gun control advocates expect the people to use, pea shooters? The people in mass could wage a credible campaign with weapons having assault rifle capabilities. There is no other Constitional right to have weapons. Shooting Bambi's mother is not. Go to the local supermarket if you need meat. I laugh when I hear Indians (native americans) insisting on their right to hunt with rifles because it's traditional. Let them be traditional and hunt with bows and arrows. I don't see the sport in hunting with a high powered rifle, maybe with a pistol. I don't see personal protection in the second amendment, but I do see it as obviously needed on the frontier of America.

It's clear to me that assault rifles under our own lock and key, our homes, makes sense and is a constitional right.

Not everyone needs one to gurantee our freedom. Five percent of the population would provide an army of 13,000,000 civilians. That number should give pause to any would be tyrant. The more distribution of firepower the better for America.

How about:

Absolutely! We can only shudder at what might have happened on 9/11 if, in addition to the box-cutter armed terrorists, there had been a camouflage wearing, assault weapon carrying, socially insensitive militia member on board each hijacked airliner!

The following is interesting. Bush sounds slot like Clinton here. Sounds like he's hinting at a gun grab.

Introduced by Attorney General John Ashcroft, President George W. Bush addresses a group of new U. S. Attorneys at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building Nov. 29. "I want to congratulate you. I must tell you that we set a high standard, and you met it. And for that, I hope you're proud," said the President in his remarks. "And I am grateful that you are willing to serve the country, particularly at this time." White House photo by Paul Morse.

3:06 P.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT:  Well, John, thank you very much for those kind words.  And I appreciate your strong leadership.  It is a principled leadership, it is a steady leadership, and it is a leadership that is good for America.

I guess we call you General.  (Laughter.)  That means you all are in the Army.  (Laughter.)  And I am glad you are.

I also want to thank Larry Thompson for his good work; thank you for being here, Larry.  And where's Al Gonzales, who is my -- (applause.)  Al led the effort to scour the country for the best to serve as U.S. attorneys, and I appreciate his hard work.  And I suspect you new U.S. attorneys appreciate his hard work, as well.  (Laughter.)

But Al has been my lawyer for a long time, and was a lawyer for the state of Texas, and was a judge for the state of Texas.  And he is a pretty special guy, and I'm glad he's here in Washington with me.  And I'm glad you all are here, as well. Thank you for coming.  I want to welcome you here.

I want to welcome the new U.S. attorneys.  I want to congratulate you.  I must tell you that we set a high standard, and you met it.  And for that, I hope you're proud.  And I am grateful that you are willing to serve the country, particularly at this time.

I know you know this, but I want to remind you that you have got a significant commitment to the security and safety of the American people.(Sounds ok so far)  We all do.  That's our job.  And it's a job we will keep.

The security and safety of our people was threatened before September the 11th.  (Oh, oh, here it comes)In many neighborhoods, there's too much gun violence in America.  Despite all the progress against crime, teenagers, almost as many teenagers die from gunshot wounds as from all natural causes combined.(Isn't this the Democrat's line)  And that's not right, and we are going to do something about it.

We must help people reclaim their neighborhoods and their streets.  We must help those who want to live in a comfortable environment feel safe.  That's one of our primary jobs.  (The Plan!)And so I proposed a program called Project Safe Neighborhoods.  And you have a clear charge to fight gun violence in America.

U.S. Attorneys will work with state and local authorities in an all-out campaign, in a focused and vigorous effort to cut gun crime.  By September of this year -- of next year, 2002, we hope to have 200 new attorneys (Just what we need) hired to prosecute crimes committed with a gun, 200 new attorneys to help you stay focused on an important mission, which is the safety of our citizens.

Investigators will have the best training and the latest technology available.  We want to enhance the technology, so we can find those, track those, communicate better with each other, to bring people to justice who commit a crime with a gun.

We'll improve data-sharing and criminal record-keeping, to ensure that people who shouldn't have guns don't get them.  We've got to prevent those people who want to use guns to hurt our fellow citizens from getting them in the first place.(And who are these people? Could end up being you and me.)

And finally, we want to make sure that the federal government works more closely with communities and community-based programs, and faith-based groups, to steer our children away from guns before they take a life or lose their own.(Is this a Republican talking?) In other words, on the one hand, I want you to be tough.  And on the other hand, I want you to rally the compassionate loving souls in neighborhoods who can teach children lessons from right, from wrong.

This is an important calling.  The methods work in those cities where they've -- we tried a program that I just outlined, they work.  Statistics show it, and now we've got to make sure it exists all across the country.

This is an important charge for you.  It's one of your top priorities, because it's one of mine.  We have got to send this message -- and I mean a clear message, an unambiguous message -- that if you illegally carry or use a gun, there is one consequence in America: arrest and jail.(Look for laws to begin changing the expand who shouldn't have a weapon)  The best way to make sure our neighborhoods are safe is to enforce the laws on the books.  And to the best of our ability, we will give you more tools to do that.

The safety and security of America also faces a new threat, and that is the threat of terror.  It is the calling of our time, to rid the world of terror. And it is the calling of our time to protect the American people.

You know, it's interesting -- I can't imagine what a speech like this would have been like prior to September the 11th, but I doubt I would have ever said, you are now on the front line of war.  And that's where you are.  And make no mistake about it, we've got a war here just like we've got a war abroad.  And we have a huge responsibility, and that's to defend America while protecting our great liberties.  And I'm confident you can do the job; otherwise you wouldn't be sitting here.

Our enemies are resourceful, and they are incredibly ruthless.  They hide and they plot, and they target freedom.  They can't stand what America stands for.  It must bother them greatly to know we're such a free and wonderful place -- a place where all religions can flourish; a place where women are free; a place where children can be educated.  It must grate on them greatly.  But that's what we're going to keep doing, because that's what America is about.

And we owe it to the American people.  We owe it to our citizens, to the families, to be relentless and methodical in tracking down terrorists and bringing each and every one of them to justice.  That's our calling.  It's the calling of the 21st century.  And it's a calling that we will not tire for; it's a calling that we will keep in our minds.  And you must keep it in your minds, because I can assure I'm going to keep it in mine.

The government and the people are determined.  And I have been able to travel our country some, and I know you can -- if you were to report back to me, you would tell me you've seen the same determination, and the same patience, and the same unity, to achieve this objective.  I like to remind people that the evil ones have roused a mighty nation, and they will pay a serious price.

Abroad, our military and our alliance is making good progress -- good, steady, significant progress.  We're disrupting their cash flows.  We're finding their bankers.  And we're shutting them down.

And it's not just America.  There are a lot of other countries who have participated with us, and that's heartening. We've got great intelligence-sharing now, around the world.  I've been able to say to a lot of leaders, face to face, you tell us when their coming.  And if we find out something about you, we'll let you know, too.  And that's important. It's important to know as much information as possible about the enemy.  It's important to try to figure out where they hide, and their intentions.  It helps to have a vast coalition willing to share that kind of information.

And we're bringing a lot of terrorists to justice around the world, as well.  I think we've arrested over 300 -- we, the coalition, has arrested over 350 al Qaeda members and terrorists.  I was able to thank President Aznar of Spain this week, for arresting eight -- eight terrorists, eight people who hate freedom are now in jail, where they should be.  And hopefully they'll give us some information that we will share with other coalition members, to keep us all safe.

And as we speak, we're enforcing the doctrine that makes it plain that not only do we seek the terrorists, but we also hold governments that harbor them and feed them and house them and hide them accountable for their behavior, as well.

Afghanistan is the first overseas front in this war against terror.  And I'm pleased to report the military is performing really well.  In a short period of time, most of the country now is in the hands of our allies and friends. We've rescued the humanitarian aid workers.  We've destroyed the Taliban military.  They're in total confusion.  The government that used to hate women, and not educate its children, and disrupt humanitarian supplies, and destroy religious symbols of other religions is now in rout.

And we've got al Qaeda on the run, too.  Now, they think they can hide, but they can't hide for long.  And they think they can run, but they can't run forever, because we will patiently, diligently, pursue them until they are brought to justice.  (Applause.)

And on the home front, terrorist violence must be prevented, and must be defeated.  And it will be, with vigilance, aggressive investigation, and certain punishment.  Already, we've committed significant new resources to homeland security.  We've improved our ability to detect and stop terrorist activity. But we've still got a lot of work to do.

I'm pleased to report the culture of the FBI is changing, the people you'll be working with in the field is changing.  Now, one in four employees of the FBI are directly involved with the efforts to track down every lead and to disrupt the evil ones.  And our new investigations are moving forward.  And as we do so, our laws are being enforced fairly and in full.

We'll hear from material witnesses.  We'll give them a chance to participate in the war against terror by telling us what they know.  We will apply the immigration laws.  We're interviewing people, on a voluntary basis. We're saying, welcome to America.  You have come to our country; why don't you help make us safe?  Why don't you share information with us?  Why don't you help us protect innocent people, women and children and men?  Why don't you help us value life?  As you enjoy the freedoms of our country, help us protect those freedoms.

But there is no doubt about our intentions, and there shouldn't be.  Those who plot terror, and those who help them, will be held accountable in America. That's what we're going to do.  Protecting the innocent against violence is a solemn duty of this country.  It is our most important responsibility now.  And all of us in this room accept that responsibility.  And we will tell the American people plainly, we will fulfill that responsibility.

To meet that obligation, a wartime reorganization is underway at the Justice Department.  More investigators will go to front lines.  The federal government will work more closely with state and local authorities -- and so will you.  Agents will receive better training and new technology, to help track and capture terrorists or those who support them.  And these changes are essential, and I want to thank the Attorney General and Director Mueller for beginning this transformation.

I have also reserved the option of trial by military commission for foreign terrorists who wage war against our country.  Non-citizens, non-U.S. citizens who plan and/or commit mass murder are more than criminal suspects.  They are unlawful combatants who seek to destroy our country and our way of life.  And if I determine that it is in the national security interest of our great land to try by military commission those who make war on America, then we will do so. (Applause.)

We will act with fairness, and we will deliver justice, which is far more than the terrorists ever grant to their innocent victims.

Ours is a great land, and we'll always value freedom.  We're an open society.  But we're at war.  The enemy has declared war on us.  And we must not let foreign enemies use the forums of liberty to destroy liberty, itself. Foreign terrorists and agents must never again be allowed to use our freedoms against us.

Many of you will play a crucial part in our victory against terrorism, and make no mistake, we're going to win the war.  Decisions important to millions of Americans will be made in your offices.  Your work in the cause of justice will help ensure the security of this nation.  And as you join this fight, you will honor the Constitution.  You will not only protect our people, but you will uphold our values.

Every federal prosecutor has the unique privilege of standing up in a court and telling the judge that you are there on behalf of the United States.  In a time of war, these words are even more deeply felt, are even more significant.

Yours is a great trust, and one of the great professions.  Today, you carry not only the confidence and respect of the American people, but you carry our deep gratitude, as well.  God bless.

END           3:24 P.M. EST

Better stash'em in a safe place before the feds come and get them.

it makes less sense than ever to allow the sale of military-style weapons.

Now is when we need military style weapons more than ever. Now, when both the nation and the Constitution are under attack. If ever there was an article that showed idiocy, this is it.

To Editor for Editorial page.

Citizens in 44 states “Do not fear Gun Owners who “Citizen Carry” (CC).”

In 1986 only eight (8) states allow “citizen carry” (CC) and crime was on the rise. In the year 2001, 42 states now have CC laws on the books and crime continues to drop. Researchers to the self-defense issue, has noticed crime begin dropping immediately after enactment in each state and showed up four - five years before the Brady law. Our Indiana neighbor has issued 350,000 CC permits and zero (0) has been revoked for a firearms homicide. In these states Police Chief’s are pleasantly surprised in the quality of the applicant.

There are 21 times more (est. 2,500,000) CC owners than “street” policeman (120,000) in the United States. Policemen killed 330 innocent citizens in 1996 and CC’ers (30). Statistically you are 300 times more likely to be innocently shot by a policeman than a CC owner. Sidebar: 700,000 Doctors kill by mistake 90,000 people annually in our nation. Our hearts should go out to each and every family and our heads need to be crystal clear on this issue. Also Citizen Carry citizens commit less crime that even Police officers as a statistical group.

Women are the fastest growing group of gun owners in the United States. “Dial 911 and Die” is real with 911 response times from 5 to 30 minutes. Police only stop 4% in the act violent crime. What logic would as representative suggest to a woman to “talk down” the rapist with AIDS or HIV or STD? 10 minutes is a long time. Get your watch and start talking. Do GG (Gun Grabbers) honestly think the rapist will use a condom? Women should be outraged at the GG for forcing such defenseless thinking. Did you know most rapes last from 2 to 4 hours.

Question? Why do you think, judges, probation officers, bail bondman, attorneys and social workers are given the right to CC or decide to carry illegally? If you ask they will tell you, they are dealing bad guys everyday and know the mindset of these early release felons.

Bad guys will always have guns. It is “dumb and dumber” to believe America is safer by taking away firearms from honest American Citizens or to make felons. Anti gun groups and faulty ordinances in Chicago land are doing just the opposite providing “gun free zones” for criminals to operate in.

Most all State Statues are written to protect the general public not the individual. It is the individual’s responsibility to protect themselves and their families at home and away from home.

Road Rage: It is a myth that CC owners kill cops, or citizens with Road Rage. In the United States over the last twenty years only two (2) known road rage shootings have occurred. Believe me if Road Rage shootings were a problem, the Gun Grabbers (GG’ers), would let us know. One case, after a car accident in TX, the driver begins to punch the man in the face, breaking his eye socket, nose. Profusely bleeding from the face and fearing for his life, the 65 yr old driver pulled his gun and shot the road raged driver saving his life.

· My personal thoughts: Every solid citizen who elects to “CC” carry’s a tremendous burden. This burden is to stay legal, or be charged with a felony or at least a grand jury indictment, should they ever break one of 25,000 gun laws or kill an attacking criminal. We have plenty of criminal laws to put them away for life should any CC’er turn to the dark side. · Jesus in the Bible was smart enough to cast blame on Cain for killing Abel, not blame the stone. Those who believe the “GG” fear spinners need to wake up. · One final closing thought, Christian religions and other religions teach the need to protect ones self. Jesus said in Luke 22:36 30 He that hath no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. The sword was the finest weapon outside of the home of its time, far better than rocks, clubs, and stones.

you summed it all up in that one sentence my friend.."13,000,000 etc." the people that are trying to take us over are deathly afraid of numbers like that..the kennedys, schumers, klintoons, and all the others don't want the populace armed cause they know they are idiots and morons and are afraid that if ever the sheeple wake up, they are standing neck deep in some very nasty "do-do".

Oh my god, those people are so stupid. THE KEY TO SECURITY IS TO ARM THE FREE GOOD CITIZENS AND TO PUNISH AND DISARM THE BAD. NOTE: P U N I S H AND disarm.

Because the Brady Bill does not punish the criminals, it simply cares to inform them in good manner to terrorists that they cannot buy firearms. IS THERE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

Keeping Crime Alive

By Jan Lamprecht
pbs@iafrica.com

This is an excerpt from Jan Lamprecht's up-coming book on South African politics. Readers should visit these pages in the future for title and publication details. -JRN

One of the biggest problems facing South Africa is the lack of foreign investment. When foreign investors met with [President] Mbeki in the past they always raised the issue of crime and the harsh labour laws of the country as being the main things preventing them from investing in South Africa. One should keep in mind that foreign investors in Africa often feel very uncomfortable about investing here because the country is not stable. A big negative for foreign investors is South Africa’s falling currency. Back in the 1960’s a Rand was worth $1.40. Now it is down to about 10c and still falling! Any foreign investor must therefore face the risk of losing money on the continually falling currency even if he makes a profit in South Africa.

Capitalism is a wonderful thing. It continuously adapts to all manner of changes in a country regardless of whether there is war or peace, stability or chaos. When the ANC appointed Minister of Health, Nkosazana Zuma, he single-handedly ruined healthcare in this country. It was only
private hospitals and clinics that survived and prospered. Zuma’s implementation of stupid socialist ideas destroyed government healthcare, but capitalism kept private healthcare alive.

Similarly, South Africa’s skyrocketing crime situation brought with it a great demand for private security companies to protect businesses as well as private citizens. In a country where economic stagnation and low growth-rates are the order of the day, only private security companies made money. Foreign investors noticed this. In the last year the only industry that has drawn foreign investment interest has been the private security industry. Reputable American and British security companies began buying up large security firms in South Africa. Companies were being bought for up to $70 million each, which is a vast sum of money by our standards. According to John Sleep of the Security Services Employer Organisation, close to $330 million was invested in security companies in South Africa. This investment by British and American companies was welcomed by the local industry. They were expecting advanced crime-fighting technology as well as additional capital to come from their new overseas owners.

Then suddenly, the ANC announced that it would force all foreign investors to disinvest from local security companies. Why would the ANC suddenly prevent badly needed foreign investment? Why would it try to stop the growth and advancement of a badly needed industry? Dick Aubin, the chairperson of Gray Security commented that the ANC move was “absolutely ridiculous.” He said it did not matter if a company’s shareholders came from London or Soweto. All that mattered was whether South Africans were professionally managing the company. He went on to say, “As a South African I would be far more concerned about a right-wing or Pagad-related security firm, even if it was run by South Africans, than about a professional security company with foreign
investors.”

The British government stepped in to discuss the matter with the ANC because this action contravened a 1998 trade agreement between South Africa and Britain. The industry regulator, the Security Officer’s Board, had made a recommendation that security firms must be wholly South African owned. This recommendation was based on a study they had done. They in turn claimed that the ANC had gone further than the Security Officer’s Board had intended. Eventually the problem was resolved. The ANC decided to withdraw the clause, which was causing the problem.

There are however, a number of important issues which came to light and which are worth dwelling on. The ANC’s real concern was the growth of the security industry and the number of weapons in their hands! Dick Aubin of Gray Security noted that they employed 10,000
people but they only had 483 weapons.

The Mail & Guardian newspaper reported being told the following by a government official, “After all, the private security industry has more people power and more weapons than the police
force.” An ANC official, Mluleke George, said the same thing. Others in the ANC, like Qalas Kgauwe, who was part of the ANC study group, said there was “nothing to convince us” to revise the proposal forcing foreign companies out of the security industry.

According to the Mail & Guardian the decision had come from a meeting held by the following high-ranking ANC ministers: Steve Tshwete (Minister of Safety and Security), Mosiuoa Lekota (Minister of Defence), Lindiwe Sisulu (Minister of Intelligence), Penuell Maduna (Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development), Nkosazana Zuma (Minister of Foreign Affairs).

According to the Mail & Guardian this high-powered group had reached the conclusion that a private security industry under foreign control was a threat to national security. (13) Shortly afterwards, other high-ranking members of the ANC stepped forward to smooth things over. They tried to pretend that nothing had happened. The most interesting remark came from the Minister of Trade and Industry, Alec Erwin. Erwin is a white communist. He is one of the few who openly acknowledges that he is a communist. Erwin made a remark to the effect that there were other ways of solving the problem. And after that cryptic remark, the subject disappeared from the headlines. What exactly did he have in mind? It would seem, based on the events, that the ANC is worried about the situation and that they will try to get their way by some other trick, rule or regulation.

The above incident highlights a great many things. Firstly, it shows that despite the ANC government’s claims to the contrary, crime is indeed out of control and people inside the country are in great need of protection. The fact that the security industry is the fastest-growing sector in the South African economy speaks volumes about the terrible state of this country. Secondly, if the security industry is bigger and better armed than the police it merely goes to show how under-funded the police really are. As I mentioned earlier, the police force has been downsized during ANC rule. Thirdly, if crime is the problem, then either the police force must be expanded or the private security industry must be expanded. It seems the ANC wants to do neither. Fourthly, it seems the ANC is more concerned about guns being in the hands of security professionals than it is about guns being in the hands of criminals!

The ANC prefers to have countless thousands of criminals running around with illegal military weapons than to let the police, security professionals or honest private citizens own guns. From all the above, it is clear to me that the ANC likes crime and doesn’t want it to go away.

KEEPING CRIME ALIVE

....extend the federal ban that expires in 2004.

I've noticed that none of the 50 million fundraising letters the NRA sends me each year ever discusses any sort of plan to kill the re-authorization of this un-Constitutional law.

Bush sounds slot like Clinton here. Sounds like he's hinting at a gun grab.

The President with the highest approval ratings *ever*, looking for a surefire way to be a single-termer. The Bush family curse, perhaps?

But Mr. McCain is hardly a hysterical gun control advocate.

Yes, he is.

Hey, no criticizing the President during war. It's frowned upon.

If Bush wants more gun control, then you must be for it because we're at war and our leaders know what is best for us. Everything would be okay if we would just trust them.
