A dear friend of mine is a kindergarten teacher at a Christian school. One of the little girls shared that her dog died. Her momma said the dog went to heaven to be with Jesus. The little girl got a strange look on her face, looked at my friend and said, "Mrs. Davis...what does God want with a dead dog?".

Jonah was swallowed by a large sea animal. What kind it was depends on how you translate the Hebrew word in the book of Jonah.

I don't know Hebrew but I think the word found there may be "tannim" which is translated as "great water-animal, whale, shark, crocodile, serpent, sea-monster" in Langenscheidt's Pocket Hebrew Dictionary.

The Greek word in the Septuagint translation and in Matthew 12.40 is "ketos" which means large fish, sea monster, or whale. The Latin form, cetus, is the name of a constellation (often rendered "whale" in English).

The NIV has "great fish" in Jonah 1.17 and "huge fish" in Matt. 12.40. You pays your money and you makes your choice.

Therefore Pinnochio was swallowed by a whale while Jonah was swallowed by a fish.

There's this little boy and he's in public school and he's doing horrible in mathematics.

So his parents decide to send him to a Catholic school in hopes that his math grades will improve.

Instantly, this kid goes from getting F's in math to A's...so his parents ask him about his great turn around and the little boy says...'When I walked into that school and saw that man nailed to a huge plus-sign, I knew they meant business!'

Seeing that the Hebrew had a specific word for whale which was not used in Jonah but instead the word for FISH was used and seeing that the word in ketos in greek can mean great fish as well as whale, the conclusion is that the translation as whale is flawed, in my opinion.

The word translated "whales" in Genesis 1.21 in the King James version (but "creatures of the sea" in the NIV) is rendered as "ta kete" (with etas, not epsilons) in the Septuagint, the plural of the word "ketos" which can mean "any sea-monster or huge fish" (sometimes translated as "whale").

I doubt the author of the Book of Jonah intended to specify whether the creature belonged to the class of fish or the class of mammals.
