A customs official found the bodies of four stowaways on Tuesday inside a shipping container in the port city of Leghorn on Italy's Tuscan coast, a police spokesman said.
Police were investigating the cause of death and trying to identify the four men, spokesman Stefano Sarafini said. Italian news reports said the bodies were found in a container of floor tiles bound for Canada.
The news reports said the stowaways were Romanian, but police did not confirm their nationality.
Thousands of immigrants enter Italy without permission every year, most of them landing on the country's largely unguarded coastline. Many of them are trying to make their way to northern Europe.
Last week, an Irish trucker found the bodies of eight refugees, most of them from Turkey, along with five survivors in a shipping container that had traveled to Ireland through Italy, Germany and Belgium.
Where have I heard that before.
