JERUSALEM (AP) - In a rare public speech, the head of Israel 's Mossad intelligence agency said Sunday that Iran was continuing its attempt to develop nuclear and other non-conventional weapons, but was also sending occasional hints that it could someday reconcile with Israel .
Mossad chief Ephraim Halevy offered his assessment at a public conference on security in Tel Aviv.
"There are Iranians in high-standing positions of influence that are saying that if there is an Israeli-Palestinian agreement ... Iran will not stand in the way of that agreement," Halevy said. "There are even covert messages of the possibility of reconciliation" emanating from Iran.
"These are lone chords at the moment, and they are in no way joining to form a melody," Halevy added, without providing additional details.
However, he also stressed that Iran was attempting to develop nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, as well as expanding its long-range missile program.
Iran and Israel have been bitter enemies for years, with Iran providing support for the militant Islamic group Hezbollah in Lebanon. Hezbollah fought for years against Israeli troops in south Lebanon.
Israel pulled its forces out of Lebanon last year, but Hezbollah still wages sporadic attacks over a disputed patch of territory along the border.
Meanwhile, Halevy described the U.S.-led campaign against international terrorism as an unprecedented development because of its focus on an organization - Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network - rather than a sovereign state.
The campaign could eventually lead some countries, such as Iran and Syria, to end their support of radical groups accused of carrying out terrorism, Halevy said.
Halevy said that after the war in Afghanistan, international pressure could mount on Syrian President Bashar Assad to "bite the bullet," and crack down on radical groups in his country.
The British-born Halevy is only the second Mossad chief to be identified by name. Until recent years, Israel 's military censor prohibited publication of the Mossad chief's name or photograph.
Halevy spoke at a security conference in December of last year in what was billed as the first ever public speech by the head of the Israeli intelligence agency.

Interesting stuff. Report on Drudge from Seymour Hersch says US developing war plan for Iraq with Iran participation. Some Iraqi opposition would be based out of Iran. Of course, Seymour could simply be auditioning for a job with Debkafiles.
If true, this seems in line with that thinking. Of course didn't Hitler send out some signal of peace and cooperation with the Soviets at the start of WWII? A real gamble, this could bite us and the Israeli's on the butt, if not eventually shoot it to smithereens with nuke warheads. Interesting.

This is very bad news for the anti-Israel crowd who accuse Israel of dirty-dealing US with all their spy activities!
Seems like Israel is still standing right along side US and civilized society! Spying on the dastardly ME nations known for terrorism.

Sooner or later all these folks will have nukes, although maybe not the missiles to deliver them. It is inevitable. We need to plan for that.

Sure they can make a nuke, but can they deliver it? They will want peace because they can probably only nuke Pakistan or Iraq. I'm not sure they could hit Israel from Iran, but I am sure Israel can hit Iran.

Israel and America have satilites that sit in Geo-synchrous orbit over the mid-east..and are movable. Maybe Iraq..Iran..Syria..Gets a quick one off..and a first hit. Unlikely though..the launchers would have to be parked in caves and rolled out to fire. They would have to know the orbit of the satilite pass in order to get more than one off. The burn phase would be detected..Israel would be reacting soon after the first missile impact. Say 40 to 60 minutes of glory for the Arab boys...then.. Allah is very busy at the recent arrival desk!

If there has been any lesson to learn from the Middle East it is this. Judge not by what they say but by what they do. Iran is purchasing long range missiles from Russia. Russia, who is our new "exciting" partner in anti-terrorism, is SELLING long range missiles to Iran. North Korea is selling long range missiles to Libya and Syria. Iran is making peace noises while making nuclear warheads. I would much prefer that they make war noises while making automobile factories.
But for a generation raised on socialistic "form over substance" thinking, the peace noises will suffice to keep the giant asleep, until Rest in Peace can be arranged.
Funny thing about birds with their heads in the sand. They will fight to keep their heads there even when the feel the executioners hands pulling on their necks.

I agree..the Mossad is an excellent org...but has that smell of being near a 'Skunk'..or should I say'Unclean Vulture' [Peres being the Hebrew word for Vulture]. Some in critical military and intel slots are Peres groomed cronies....Peres has to go..and maybe these men too...as the Poisoning may be terminal..mental restoration for those exposed to Peres not possible. Israel's leadership continues to project an 'Unwillingness' to own the land they have aquired in military conflict... in a sense..they have no future vision for the State of Israel..everything is on the Fly..and they do not have the 'Determination' to use emphatic power to keep or maintain it'. At every turn..they are saying.."ok have it back...we are sorry for causing the world trouble....could you please just acknowledge that we exist." Solomon..King David ..or Even Saul!..whould have had Peres head off long ago..they would have marched out to meet their aggressors..and "Routed" them utterly... Israel needs to find Her Heart again..She will...Ezekiel chap 37-39 show this...but at what cost ..and at how much humiliation. I can't bear Shimon Peres..He has no soul...he is a cancer that is making Israel sick from within!
