Have Bin Laden and Omar been quietly eliminated to avoid public trial, media extravaganza?

The question speaks for itself. Reasons the above could be true.
1. Constant reports of intercepting radio communications from Bin Laden and earlier from Omar...and now they're just "gone....poof."
2. Elinating them makes a lot of media sense, population control sense, military sense, etc.
3. Evaluating the three: (1) Killed and announced as being killed. (2) Killed and the fact hidden. (3) Captive and kept in seclusion for perpetuity. (4) Captive with eventual public tribunal.
Clearly, the worst of those scenarios is the last. I can't think of anyone excited about that prospect, except maybe such as Saddam Hussein, Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah.
Number 3 has the burden of perpetual silence that would be too easily violated. A benefit would be the interrogation that could take place to reveal threads of the network and the money trails to kill the entire monster. I don't think, however, that silence could be perpetually maintained.
The best reason for death and announced death is that one could say that its over; over and done with.
The best reason for secretive death is that it provides some opportunity to make inroads into tracking the network and the money. If members of the team are uncertain about the demise of the devils, they might just start taking actions that would enable them to be tracked. Another reason silence would be good is that it makes Bin Laden look defeated and cowardly...not a great legacy.

Killed in public fashion. Wrapped in pigskin and dangled from the statue of liberty. Filmed 24x7 with a web cam until there is nothing left of him. That is the best outcome for us. It is all that a barbaric arab world understands.

You left out the obvious best choice. Captured, interrogated, then killed without anyone knowing about it. That keeps these monsters as the "face" of terroism, which provides public support to progress the war against remaining terrorist cells.

The point about Arabs liking demonstration of power is valid. But I think a public trial would backfire and enable Bin Laden to look like a martyr to MUSLIMS. That's more problems than I want to shoot at.
Send in 007 and quietly take him out.

Captured, interrogated, then killed without anyone knowing about it Excellent point. My concern is if it could be kept secret. If it isn't, then we've created a martyr AND offered another reason for the liberal, hate-America crowd and the survivalist, America-is-a-police-state crowd to smear us.

There is NO WAY OBL will EVER see the inside of a courtroom. EVER.
Just my opinion.

Prediction: 50-50 chance US forces will find OBL's body in a cave.

Hope you're right; if Katie Couric can warm up to a lady who kills her 5 kids, the day after the event, then I'm sure she'll find a way to assist in the elevation of binLaden to martyr status.

Good possibility that one of our bombs, missiles, took him out. Maybe you're correct. Wonder if they'll make it public or keep it secret if that turns out to be true.

to secretly hold ubl, apply the full spectrum of interrogation techniques, and then a bullet in the head-no fanfare, no reporting 'til years later-if at all: suits me.

Only if we get to the body before the EA does.
Delay of announcement can be justified by, DNA tests, etc.

The evidence mounts:
1. The White House authorizes the release of that videotape. They never would have done that if there was even a remote chance that Osama bin Laden would still be alive on Election Day 2004.
2. The Secretary of Defense visited the troops in Afghanistan the other day.
3. The U.S. embassy in Kabul opened yesterday for the first time since 1989.
I don't know about anyone else here, but I can't imagine that these things would have happened if the U.S. wasn't certain about Osama's demise.

To answer your questions: No, but they should be quietly killed and placed in unmarked graves to prevent martyrdom. The liberal press needs to get over its "definition of victory".

Good news freepers. They are gonna pay Couric 100 million to stay on the air. 100 million for a near-moron left winger. That means the networks are so desperate to get their message out, they will pay throgh the nose for a third rate hack.

While your idea has merit, consider: It's all about the economy. The economy won't recover as strongly as possible unless people feel secure. They won't feel secure unless the 'boogeyman' in the form of Bin Laden is publicly killed..

Travis McGee, another Freeper, has a theory about binLaden campaigning to be seen as a Mahdi. He'd have to explain it, but it makes sense, and it relates to how best binLaden should meet his demise.
Paging Travis!

Positive ID of remains would be a good excuse for keeping secret for a long time. Hadn't thought of that. Good point.

Exactly what you mention, especially the Rumsfeld visit, had me scratching my head at the time. It seemed incredibly cocky for those who thought they'd lost track of their prey.

Yeah, the "definition of victory" stuff is beginning to stick in my craw. I think it's just the cowards' way getting this over for two reasons.
1. They don't want Bush's ratings so high because of war; especially going into congressional campaign season next year. Therefore, they need to get this over with and the TOTAL war stopped.
2. They actually have warm feelings toward Saddam Hussein who is leader of a SOCIALIST group in Iraq. Although he's a rat, he's one of their rats, and they'd rather not confront him. They want this to be the end of the war; not the end of only the Afghan campaign piece of the war.

But isn't she such a "perky" little cheerleader for the liberal socialist, hate-America first party?
