Posted on 12/15/1990 1:42:33 AM PST by newsperson999
a very warm fall left Lake Erie at record warm levels...lake temp are in the low 40's..a low has stalled the past few days over SE Canada..creating a WSW flow off Lake erie..Incredible amounts of snow have fallen..keep in mind going into this they had only 1.5 inches..the least for this late in the season......
5 pm report....... SNOW FELL AT THE RATE OF 2 TO 4 INCHES PER HOUR WITHIN THIS BAND...AND UP TO SIX INCHES PER HOUR AT TIMES!
SOME ASTOUNDING SNOWFALL RECORDS HAVE BEEN SET HERE AT THE BUFFALO AIRPORT DURING THE LAST 4 DAYS. A TOTAL OF 55 INCHES OF SNOW HAS BEEN RECORDED SINCE CHRISTMAS EVE! THIS IS BY FAR THE GREATEST AMOUNT OF SNOW EVER HERE IN A FOUR DAY STRETCH AND IS JUST A FOOT SHY OF THE MONTHLY RECORD OF 68.4 INCHES IN DEC 1985.
THE SNOWFALL HAS BEEN BROKEN DOWN AS FOLLOWS...
.CHRISTMAS EVE...20 INCHES
.CHRISTMAS DAY... 5 INCHES
.WEDNESDAY EVENING. 8 INCHES
.TODAY...........22 INCHES
THE 24 HOUR TOTAL OF 29.6 INCHES SINCE 7 PM LAST NIGHT IS THE SECOND GREATEST EVER AT BUFFALO. THE 25.2 INCHES ON DEC 24-25 IS NOW THE FOURTH GREATEST EVER..TWO OF OUR FOUR GREATEST STORMS EVER IN ONE WEEK!
At this time the snowband has once again stalled in the city producing snowfall rates of 2-4 inches per hour..this band should remain stationary or move north a few miles thru at least sunrise...this band produced 18 inches of snow in 6 hours (6pm-12) when it was south of the city

I hope folks are shoveling that snow off their roofs, or we're going to get treated to stories of cave ins.

Sheesh....was someone in Buffalo wishing for a White Christmas?????? (Actually, I'd like to experience it once in awhile.)

also the most snow in 24 hours was 37.9 inches in 1995...the 29 inches for 2nd place 8 inches fell last night and 22 since noon today..so they have until noon friday(10 hours) to get 16 inches to break the "24 hour record" which they will if that band stalls over the airport overnight..looks like heaviest just a tad south but that band should move north a litle over night.

We once had a blizzard in MI two days AFTER the snow-removal equipment had been removed from the garbage trucks.

Weather Channel Buffalo forecastThere's a radar map on the page (scroll down a bit) that you can click to put in motion. That lake phenomenon is pretty amazing.
Have fun! ;-)

Here in Amherst (Northern suburbs) things have been quiet for several hours. It snowed like crazy earlier in the day. I guess the lake effect has shifted to the south for a while . The streets near me are clear and have been plowed, although I think there is a travel ban in effect. The Youngman expressway portion of the New York State Thruway was closed at Exit 50 (Main STReet) for a while. Everybody had to get off there so the Shannon Pub served a buffet dinner for all the people who got stranded. There was roast beef, baked potatoes, potato chowder, chicken, vegetables etc. It went down well with Guiness. Some Mexicans wanted directions to Canada but I told them that the Peace Bridge was closed. All the ski resorts are south of the city and as of yesterday they had gotten very little snow, although that has probably changed by now.

Most snow I ever saw in my life was just across the lake at Ft Erie. My house was the last one west of town until a snow fence 5 1/2 miles away, and just on the other side of rhe road from the lake and fort. One day I started shoveling out to the roadway, and had to shovel my way back to the house, it was falling and drifting so fast, My TR3 was buried before I had a chance to get it into the garage.
I am presently "freezing" in the 50 degree weather here in Florida. My dh used to say we would move to Cayman if it got much colder. Sure wish he were still here to make me smile. He would have been 59 in two days. I'd stand out nekkid in the snow if I could have him back -- but I know he is happier where he is.

Erie County is now in a state of emergency. Travel bans all over the place. Still coming down as shown on the radar.
