Computer Question

I am running WindowsME (aka WindowsMF) on a Dell 1GHZ Pentium III machine.

Each evening at 6:00 PM some program runs that queries Drive A (even when empty) and other drives. How can I determine what program is running on this schedule checking these drives? I cannot find anything scheduled.

It could be your anti-virus program, or it could be FindFast. FindFast is/was part of Microsoft Office and scans the hard drive periodically to find all the word and excel documents you have. Then office uses the index of these documents when you want to open a file. Supposedly, this saves time.

Hit: CTRL-ALT-DEL

When the menu window pops-up, it will list what programs that are running at the time.

Check your Task Scheduler (find right bottom corner of screen, icon is one of those next to clock). It's probably Norton or some such running a scan.

There is a great little program called Task Info. Small but efficient. Once you load it, it provides a list of everything that is currently *running* on your computer. You should be able to tell what is doing the check. They have a free trial on it so you can use it to find out. http://www.iarsn.com/index.html#/download.html

I went and downloaded Zone Alarm and installed it to prevent hackers storing their garbage on our hard drives after we went to a cable modem. Zone Alarm is a free download (available here) which has an interesting feature. It asks you before it allows a program on your computer to access the internet. Since we use Netscape, I became really, really curious when Zone Alarm kept asking if we would allow Internet Explorer to access the Internet. when Internet Explorer was supposedly not running, even in the background. I would appreciate anyone explaining this to me. I still do not allow IE access.

Hmmmmmmmm......

Start; settings; Control Panel; Fast Find

Check on the interval schedule.

That might be what is running automatically.

Go here -- http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk.

And click on Startup Tips.

I found 27 programs running on my PC due to various applications loading their junk programs at startup. I was able to shut off half of them. My system ran faster too!

Click Start, click run, type msconfig,in the box that comes up click startup,
uncheck anything you don't need to load at startup, this may solve your problem
it may also speed up boot time.

I had BlackIce but it doesn't allow outgoing blocks -- and it costs $$$. Zone Alarm is free and also allows permanent blocks. It's just that I like to know what's going on - not I that I understand the detail.........

This is a little off topic but might be helpfull to some.

I use Zone Alarm and I received an E-Mail from them with a special offer (now expired) that offered Zone Alarm Pro and a program called Pest Patrol.

Pest Patrol is a program that seeks out spyware installed (unknown to you) on your computer.  You are given the option to eliminate the spyware if you wish, which I wish.  When I installed Pest Patrol I found 5 spyware cookies on my computer and have since had another one show up.

You use Pest Patrol kind of like a virus program.  You run it whenever you wish and it will check your hard drive for any spyware  Like a virus program you go to there site for any updates on new spyware.  It's a good program for cleaning out any spyware that gets put on your computer.

If you value your privacy and don't believe anyone has the right to track your computer usage then I recommend this program.

Zone Alarm Pro is nice to.  It will do a whosis for you.  I just got a hit on Zone Alarm and looked it up.  Here is the info it gave me.

I Agree with what's above.

It's most likely your Anti Virus Software or a Seceduled Task.

Try disabling your AV software around the time it happens (don't download anything though till you turn it back on) and see if it helps..

If not, look through your scheduled tasks.. and use the process of elimination.

Well I just woke up ole Orit..........nahhhh not really .

I have the Freebee ZA and as long as it keeps em out I really don't care who they are albeit a nice feature for those that do wanna know.

I figure if No Such Agency want's to listen to my verbage all they are gonna do is call themselves Sally Jones from Middleville USA anyhow. I tried the pop up killer software but it seem to have a few conflicts with ME.

Stay Safe !
