This is good news for the dog, he’s no longer on the end of the blame chain - he can pass the blame on to the microbes!

Whoo-boy, they have gone round the bend this time. I have a visual of the puppets Alton Brown uses in “Good Eats” to describe how yeast works and I can’t stop laughing.

Will it prevent “global warming” if the Ubanga family lights their farts in the White House?

In light of your screen name please note that I’m only politely pointing out this line:

“it could mean that as ice sheets melt under warmer temperatures, they would release large amounts of heat-trapping methane gas.”

Warmer = AGW (its all our fault - but not yours!)

;-)

On further thought:

Recent data (untainted, reliable data, that is) indicate a general cooling in the atmosphere, but a change in the sunspot cycle could warm things up. So would volcanic activity or meteoric impacts.

This ancient microbe nonsense sounds more like something from a Superman comic book or a science fiction scenario (Jurassic Park) than anything else. The “white coats” floating this “theory” ought to hire a screenwriter or find a position in the priesthood at the Church of Scientology. They might even consider honest work as a way to support themselves.

It's been over fifty years since I sat in a high school physics classroom but I seem to recall that pressure has the effect of raising the temperature of the matter (generally a gas, but presumably also a solid or liquid) under pressure. I'm no Al Gore, but the weight of centuries (millennia?) of accumulated ice and snow pressing down on ancient microbes might raise their temperature.

Whatever, I like “Microbe Flatulence” as a name for a rock band. Things should be named after things they resemble.
