I've seen it in all the tabloids too!
IIRC, the Mayan Empire was extinguished by the conquering Aztecs just before the conquistadors arrived, who BTW put an end to the human sacrifices practiced by both cultures. Their ethnic descendants are found in Meso-America to this day.
So why is any credibility at all given to any predictions made by pagan barbarian sun-worshippers of an extinct system?
Not that cataclysmic events are to be ruled out. I’m sixty-three and am convinced that my own death will not come about due to natural causes at the normal end of life.

I’m not convinced. The Bible says some more “stuff” has to happen. It appears to be on the way,. but we have 7 years once the first-final events kick off...
The end of the free world could come a bit earlier on November 6th if Obama is re-elected.
Lord knows, it’ll be fun at the grocery store, etc around that time. I predict utter panic.

It doesn’t predict an end of the world. It predicts a change. And perhaps that change will be a good thing.
Good point. The Mayan calender actually extends beyond the year 4800 as I recall. In their calender certain major events are predicted on a regular basis, the year 2012 being the next example, but there is no evidence to suggest they actually predicted the end of the world next year.
It is spooky that Biblical eschatology, predictions and "prophecies" imply the same general time frame for upheaval/cataclysm and beginning of something new. Add to that some possible alignment of the zodiac with the milky way? Am I way out in left field here or what?
Nobody knows the day or the hour of His return, but likewise, the world will not end until everything He has pronounced is fulfilled.
Of course the western hemisphere really isn’t addressed in Scripture, so it isn’t impossible that by His grace, He reminds the rest of the world of an impending Great Tribulation by making an example of His wrath upon those who attack His Plan. Nothing says the Americas won’t get severely rearranged in the near future.

There is no question that 2012 is going to be the end of the world. But only for one of two groups. It could end and likely will for Obama supporters. OTOH, there is at least some possibility that it will end for the Freepers. We should know for sure which group survives by early November 2012.
