You also have the option to backup the essentials, and reinstall the OS. While this may seem extreme, it might be your best option.
You can also check for root contamination. Search on stinger, tdsskiller, mbam.
Everybody should know that command. Very helpful.
It’s almost always too much crap in start up.
Every time someone says their computer runs slow, they have a dozen icons in their systray.
Kids/Teens are the worst as they visit sites that load apps on their PC and they don’t use any AV or Anti-Malware.
BTW, I still run WXP SP3 because the newer Win Operating Systems are bloated.
WXP with 4GB of RAM although the OS only recognizes 3.5GB, but it’s still fast and I run AVG and Malwarebytes.

I use avg anti-virus and like it. And I did use their free trial maintenance thingy. I guess it worked okay, but don’t notice much difference in speed. But my old laptop wasn’t too slow anyway.
But now every day it gives a big warning that my tuneup is out of date, but I need to buy the tuneup (which I don’t want). It takes a few different types of clicks to get rid of the warning box. Annoying.
Apart from needing to clean up the start up, it sounds like you may need to replace your RAM. If it is the RAM, you will need to replace it before you can tweak your software.
I second the CCleaner recommendation, and also the Malwarebytes. If you download software off of the Internet, you almost certainly have bugs you need to be rid of.
Three of the computers at my household run Win 7, and two run XP, all without problems. My wife’s work laptop has Win 8, and it crawls because the techs have too much running on too little.

Yes, XP is by far the fastest. And there is little you miss btwn that and newer OSes But they say it is more vulnerable, and support runs out this July
The reason you can only use 3.5 ram is bcz you have 32 bit hardware and OS. The main reason i upgraded to W/8 (for 29.00) because was i would run out of ram if i kept going. There is a 64 bit XP, but it is not as mature as later versions.
Go to control panel, and find programs and features if you're using 7. Scroll down until you find AVG PC Tuneup; Click on it and remove it. That should stop the warning box popping up.
AVG is my favorite Antivirus. The PC Tune Up App is likewise one of the better tools I've seen. It is pretty easy to use and fairly safe.
For a system that is really junked up and nothing extraordinary in way of additional apps, sometimes the best and quickest fix is a complete reinstall if you can find all of your license keys. Do back up any data, docs, pics, and etc. you wish to keep!
Back your files up on an external drive. Replace Toshiba with Macbook. Virus scan files and transfer to Macbook. Run winter apps in Parallels emulator.
Not trying to platform flame here. I am a Mac user, but maintain Parallels with XP running for those days when I need a windows presence. It is a very effective combo.
Go to the Start button and in the ‘search programs and files’ window type in MSCONFIG and in the utility that starts you can choose, in the Startup tab, which programs you want to run automatically at startup.

First do what Pox said ,, then download “Spybot Search and Destroy” from Filehippo.com ,, put it in expert/advanced mode and then use it’s “Startup Tools” to clean up your system...
I too have a Toshiba Satellite Pro C650 with Windows 7. It recently developed problems with Internet Explorer. I can’t get Explorer to work but must revert to Google Chrome to get on the internet.
Any suggestions?

After you manage to get it cleaned to the point you can run it, get rid of Norton any way you can because it’s likely the central cause of your problem. I’ve had it lock machines up to the point of having to rebuild Windows to fix it, just for the crime of trying to update it. You may have to contact them to get a removal tool.
There are a lot of good anti-viral programs out there that aren’t a obnoxious as Norton. Usually the one offered by your ISP is sufficient.
Get rid of Google Chrome was a good suggestion and just personally I would get rid of Norton and get Avast. I am on my second Toshiba Satellite. Great computer but the dual processer will freeze up. I have Windows XP and it used to freeze up all the time. I finally just went in and cleaned out all the crappy programs, got rid of Norton etc and its a lot better now.
Mr. GG2 and my Mom just got new Satellites that do not have dual processer and they never freeze up. They have had a few problems with the Windows 7 though.
I would guess then that you have some kind of trojan or other invader; also a possible result of the malware that gets in by way of those web apps.
As was suggested earlier, Malwarebytes is pretty good at clearing these things out.
If the invader prevents you from downloading Malwarebytes then try the safe mode with networking and download it from there. If that doesn’t work, download it on another PC onto a flash drive and run it from the flash drive.

I was running Malware Bytes and trying to delete Wajam, 24X7 Help and PC Speed Help and then Windows suddenly shut down!!
