The people who master space technologies and master the techniques required to colonize these worlds, and the ability to move people to and from these worlds, and mine them and explore them, are the people who will dominate the coming century. The rest of us will be working for them. I’d like it to be our kids and grandkids, and not the Chinese, for example.
The universe is laid out before us. Everything we will ever need is right out there waiting for us. It would be a monumental tragedy to turn our backs on it in order to spend more on food stamps.
They want to get everyone psyched about Mars before the movie comes out.
(It was a fun book, and does nothing to change my enthusiasm for space exploration.)
Probably not a molten core. Our molten core creates the movement of the crust (tectonic plates) which causes changes in environment. Without the molten core, we would just stagnate.
While not a “planetarian”, I have often wondered what the asteroid belt has to do with the current state of Mars. Seems to me that the asteroids used to be a plant that would have affected rotations and orbits of other planets.
Perhaps after we and Russia and China settle the “extreme islam” problem, we will settle on a plan to get out of Dodge and go start over on Mars.
