My father-in-law was an absolute war hero who served from 1938 to 1966. He was wounded seriously several times in combat and received a lot of recognition. But the guy was an absolute terror to his own family, beating the crap out of everyone in the family for years. My wife's mother died 20 years before she should have because of a brain aneurism most likely caused by frequent head injuries.
People who served honorably and courageously in the military sometimes have flaws that cause serious problems for those around them in civilian life. Criticizing veterans for the bad things that they have done in civilian life is NOT DISRESPECTING THE MILITARY!!! But ignoring their shortcomings often is disrespecting the military.

If Trump loses, it will because of idiotic statements like this, that enable about half the American people to think Trump disrespects those who serve. Instead of defending Trump, we should go on the offense.
#1 there were no “front lines” in Afghanistan. DeSantis was with the commander of the Seal Team One in Fallujah. There was shooting all over the place.
#2 DeSantus was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service for his service in theater (not for valor), along with an Iraq Campaign Medal for having deployed. This speaks well of his service as a staff officer. In comparison, “Eyepatch McCain” was awarded a Bronze Star for valor, a Commendation Medal for valor and a Purple Heart. The actual John McCain was awarded a Silver Star, two Legions of Merit for valor, three Bronze Stars for valor, and a Purple Heart.
#3 Donald Trump was awarded a series of draft deferments for going to college; then, when the student deferment thing wasn’t good, he got a doctor to tell his draft board he had a bum foot. Many years later, when asked which foot, he said you could look it up.
#4 Like Trump, Joe Biden received a series of student deferments through college and then law school. When, he, like Trump, could no longer rely on student deferments, Biden got a doctor to tell his draft board that he had asthma as a teenager. Biden is given a pass on military service in part because he’s a Democrat, but also in part because one of his sons, Beau, served.
Just below his surface Joe has always been a foul, evil, tyrannical bully at heart. He can't hide that now even if he tries. He will just exhibit more and more of those traits before he finally succumbs. To be trapped in such an addled mind I once have said was a fate I would not wish on my worst enemy. I have compared it to someone in a vegetative state or coma unable to scream out to someone to please not pull the plug on their life. Or maybe just to go ahead and do it. We will never know their mind, not now, or just what they may want if anything. Since Joe has come along I have changed my mind. I will be very happy to see him suffer if he is still aware and depart along with his whole cabal even if I know there will be others at least he will be gone and at least his time of cruel anger will end.
Remember Reagan's final letter? That was unusual for at least two reasons. One is that he could still reason and know he was going and the other was that his natural state exhibited was that of a kind care taker who no longer could. My late Momma was a bit like that; a care taker. She could be mean as a snake to defend but she gasped her last breath three times as she tried to fight for life to stay for why we can guess.

On the other hand Crenshaw is a self-absorbed RHINO who used his SEAL status to get elected. He has taken good care of himself in Congress. Lookup hubris and it will say "see Dan Crenshaw." Eyepatch McCain is appropriate. Crenshaw is all about taking care of Crenshaw not Veterans. McCain treated the military especially veterans like crap. He was always the first to vote for cuts and served the military industrial complex like a cheap whore. Had you ever met him you would walk away thinking "what a dick." Screw his military record, I do not give two Shiites that he was a POW, he was no friend to vets. Trump was in my opinion too kind to him.
Being a veteran does not give you a pass for being a self-centered greedy a$$hole. Being a veteran does not exempt you from criticism by the 99% of the citizens of this country who have never served. Anymore than cops or judges are above criticism.
