I agree. I had BB and pellet guns at 12 but I didn’t have a .22 until I was 15. I was also taught all about what they could do and about respect for life and property long before that. I was also pretty clear about what my dad would do if I messed up. There was no chance he would side with me either.

Around here back before it was so over developed we had boys who duck hunted. Mainly because their families were dirt poor & they ate them. None of them ever just shot for the fun of killing the geese or ducks. I learned then to respect guns. I would be very worried if my children had ever hurt animals just for the fun of it. To me that would be a red flag for getting those kids help asap. I would be worried they might be future sociopaths.

This is so sad. Words fail me.

I’d cheerfully shoot anyone who would do such a thing to our horses. Anyone who does that kind of thing doesn’t need to be ‘understood’. They just need to be dead.

This is a horrid, sad event for all involved. For those of you who have been 12 year old boys, or have boys who have been 12...think about the decision making process of most 12 year old boys. They certainly don’t think in the adult world.

Here we have two 12 year olds, who have never been in trouble before in their lives. They are left alone, without adult supervision (as are many children the same age, our society finds this acceptable). The boy who lives in the home, has been taught gun safety by his step-father, who has all of the guns in the home locked in a gun cabinet. Downside is, boy knows where the key is, and none of the bullets are locked up.

No one will ever know exactly what occurred, but the boys decided to target practice at an orange cone, across a field from the home. One thing lead to another (it is suspected the visiting friend hit the horses and the house) and we are left with two very scared boys being handcuffed, printed, mugshot and locked up in JDH awaiting a hearing.

JDH is a wonderful place (not), where the majority of the inmates are repeat offenders and have various mental challenges. These boys are locked in with drug dealers, boys who have committed assault (in some cases against their own parents), car thieves, you get the drift. One of the boys had another older boy threaten to drive a spork through his hand. The boys are limited to 5 hours a week of visits from their parents.

Yes, this will be a life changing event for these boys. Hopefully, it can be one they learn from and follow the straight and narrow. If we shoot them, beat them within an inch of their lives, or do some of the other things which have been suggested in these postings, does this make us better? Or help these boys? Every one of us has done something stupid in our lives, most of us just did not get caught.

We don’t live in Iran...we live in the USA. If we are Christians, we should offer forgiveness to two boys who are truly remorseful and do what we can to offer love and compassion, so these boys don’t become bitter with the system and truly become criminals.

It sounds like you are pretty close to this situation. And that one of those boys is yours. Seems pretty convenient that you blame the friend. Was it the friends house or yours. Who was in charge of these kids anyway?

To Clydesdale

Sounds like you are the mother of one of the boys. The mother who was suppose to be in charge at the time! How convenient for you to put the blame on the other child. Where are you getting your information? From your own child? It was your house and your responsibility to make sure it was safe for children to be left along for extended periods of time. I do not believe that you did not know there were guns in the house. They were you husbands guns and your child knew where the key was. This was probably not the first time he played with the guns. These boys made a horrible mistake that day, they are equally responsible for their actions. But a lot of the responsibilty falls on you. Wake up!!
