Hey, waiting on the update on Jr... hopin’ it’s good news...
Family’s doing good. Jeanne’s doing the best she’s done in years, thank God.
According to Jr's Facebook post, he has a hemangioma on his knee. (I didn't get that word from him or the Mrs. in the explanation, and googling it gets most infant references). It's a mass of blood cells. What it's not is cancer (although they'll still do a biopsy). It will probably require surgery. He's got an appointment with a specialist (the only one in Richmond that does this surgery) next Monday.
He also has a job interview on Thursday.
Thanks for the prayers on all fronts.
Hullo Sam!
Glad to hear you’re OK - would like to see the painting when it’s done. :)
Good news I guess.... except for the surgery part. :~\
Rosie - coming over for 24 tonight?
We’re very happy to hear that. We hope her health will remain that way. Say hey to the young archers in your family.
Yep!
Hullo, Sam! Long time no see!
No spoilage. I haven’t watched it yet and somebody on Facebook already ruined part of it. You know what I mean once you see it.
No... darn few, and fewer like Mr. Champagne. I realize that the audience for this event is a fairly narrow one, and of course most people have no idea who he was. Heck, I'm still a novice in this area of scholarship. I only found out about his work within the last couple of years.
But within the swordsmanship community this is a loss that is hard to describe. The undocumented knowledge that he died with will take others far too long to reconstruct. He was probably among the very very few world experts in the truly and historically accurate techniques of swordsmithing. He made his swords from scratch. And when I say "from scratch" I mean that he dug his own iron ore out of the ground, smelted his own iron from it and forged it into steel in his own forge. He hammered out the steel and tempered it and sharpened it and made weapons that if a 15th century Noble picked it up... he'd have recognized it as a good piece.
I have no idea what a Paul Champagne sword cost. I'm pretty sure I couldn't have afforded one. They took months, if not years to make. But they're also the sort of thing that just aren't ever available for sale. I'm not aware of one that has ever been resold from its original owner.
There's a good interview with Mr. Champagne, here.
OK - well come over when you will :)
Sad that he didn’t have an apprentice or two. There are so few who are true craftsmen these days, and sadly not many who are interested in learning from them. It’s usually not well paid work, so young folks aren’t clamoring for it.
FYI — a major motion picture is in pre-production of the book ‘Sword of the Eagle’, written in 1954. it is one of a genre of Roman historical fiction aimed at high school students. It takes place in Roman Britain north of Hadrian's Wall at the time of the absolute peak of the Roman Imperium, the reigns of Hadrian and Trajan. I can't remember another movie made about Rome at its height, after Nero and before the end of the reign of Marcus Aurelius, except for the eruption of Vesuvius.
Glad it wasn’t cancer and hope it gets resolved quickly. At least that won’t be on his mind for his interview.
Thanks. I told him that he could get some use out of Nana’s stair lift that we still haven’t had removed.
Now if we could only get the dog to use it...
Did I mention that Luke and I saw the President’s motorcade yesterday? Walked off the Metro right onto Constitution Avenue as he was coming across 14th Street.
Even though it was carrying the man who is destroying our country, it was a pretty impressive sight.
Hi Rosie, nice to see you too, and all the folk over here.
Thanks LCS, sounds like a fascinating movie. I hope they do a good job with it.
Corin, that sounds hopeful for Luke, glad to hear it. Still, it’s kind of worrisome.
Thanks Sam. Actually it’s Jr with the knee problem.
Luke’s too busy becoming a math and science geek to have sports injuries.
