A corollary to this is the theory that Cro-Mags and Neandertals could coexist, with the Cro-Mags using projectiles to hunt small game, while the Neandertals concentrated hand-to-hand slaughter of megafauna, which their superiour physical prowess. Once the climate shifted and the megafauna began to dwindle, the balance shifted decisively in favour of the Cro-Mags.

One side had range weapons, the other side, personal weapons.
We see who ‘won’.

25,000 to 30,000 years ago Homo Sapiens came up with the atlatl which was a throwing stick for spears. by notching the butt end of the spear into the end of a two foot or so stick, you essentially increase the length of your throwing arm by two feet and the power behind the spear throw exponentially. The neanderthals had only stone tipped spears for jabbing or throwing. So one guy can set up on a piece of high ground and use an atlatl aided spear throw at some distance while the other guy had to get up close and jab the mammoth while it was running him down. I know which guy I'd want to be.
