“I hope I’m within arm’s reach of my wife when it happens.”
Me too. In our graves - hundreds of years from now! Although ask me that again in 3 years, it might beat what we will be dealing with then!
And we may have more time than the 8 minutes (reading the article again, the sun is 8 light minutes away. There was an old Twilight Zone with this story - but it was set in New York at night. The other side of the earth was getting fried, but NY was still okay for now! Merideth Burgess (I think) was the main character. He figured out what was happening, and after years of building up courage to say hi to some gal (a librarian??) - realizing he only had 12 hours left. She said yes, they went out, etc.
Great story to make one think!
But that at least two stars had to exist before the Sun to yield us the heavy metals we use. An earlier 1-2 billion years....
But then God knew we were coming.
I read somewhere that experts believe that the universe is around 15 billion years old.Current theory and observations suggest that this is between 13.61 and 13.85 billion years.
I am thinking since the universe is expanding and this is currently 12.2 billion light years, it may not be that old because it used to be closer, although I would not have any idea how to calculate such a thing.I don't think it matters about the expansion. If the blast is 12.2 billion light years away, and the light is reaching us now, it means it happened 12.2 billion light years ago (plus or minus our own scientific uncertainty in the measurement of how far away it is).
Sentence fragment non-sequitur?
"Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering kaboom!"
