Fault-rate ping.
Guess the Bush catastrophes are behind us. ;-)
Beat me too it!

Thanks decimon."Our findings suggest the steady-state model of quasi-cyclical earthquakes that works well for faults at the boundaries of tectonic plates, such as the San Andreas fault, does not apply to the New Madrid fault," said Calais, who is a professor of earth and atmospheric sciences. To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list. |

or maybe it has built up as far as it can go before it pops
'New Madrid fault system may be shutting down'Bush's Fault.
That’s got my vote.
I think that the key word in the statement is
may be
Maybe...
Why didn’t they discuss the possibility that it’s locking up and getting more tension building up???
Why, just yesterday I was reading, right here on this forum, posted by well known and respected posters (!) that the whole plate tectonics thing is a flawed theory, and not worthy of additional consideration, probably put forth by a bunch of no nothings.

That's what he was talking about - "elastic deformation". This occurs when the fault is "locked up" due to friction and the surrounding rock gradually deforms as more and more stress is placed on the fault until it finally slips. From what he's saying, there could be a certain amount of stress on the fault, but it is not increasing, as indicated by the lack of increased elastic deformation in the surrounding rock.
Wait, there was an earthquake felt in this region about a year ago, so is this right?
From the article: ""We can't tell whether the recent cluster of big earthquakes in the New Madrid is coming to an end. But the longer the GPS data keep showing no motion, the more likely it seems."
I guess yours was one of the cluster. Kind of like braking to a stop. If they had regenerative braking on that quake then you could charge your batteries for forever. ;-)
another victim of obama’s economy.
