Why dont you just set your kitchen timer? It only goes to 1 billion years. Don't wanna have to keep resettin' it.

The good news is that the likelihood of such a smash-up is small, around one-in-2500. And even if the planets did careen into one another, it would not happen before another 3.5 billion years, at which time we’d just be paying the last bit of interest owed for Obama’s insane fiscal policies.

Yeah, I have the same problem. You would think they could have an infinity timer...

If you consider all the things that have had to fall into place to get us to our current scenario, one-in-2500 is practically a certainty...

“Bush’s fault.”
Dang, three witty and original “Bush” references in less than a minute, I am impressed.

Only 3.5 billion years? That will zip by before we know it. We gotta get busy fixing it right now. Tax something! Control something! Ban something! Take away our rights! It's obviously a man made catastrophe and we can prevent it if we just throw enough money at it. Paging Mr Gore!

Wasnt there a Russian astronomer that theorized about this? Velikovsky I believe. He suggested that we had near run-ins with both Mars and Venus in the past. The book was Worlds in Collision, written in about 1950 or so. A very interesting read, well researched and tying historical events to the possible cause of a close pass of the near earth-sized comet which was captured into an orbit and is now known as Venus.
Many of his theories were proven correct when the space program enabled exploration.

Thank you much! I’m off to read more about him. I have a copy of the book waiting for me at the library.

Hey, been there, done that. ;')
A force known as orbital chaos may cause our Solar System to go haywire, leading to possible collision between Earth and Venus or Mars, according to a study released on Wednesday. The good news is that the likelihood of such a smash-up is small, around one-in-2500. And even if the planets did careen into one another, it would not happen before another 3.5 billion years.
