I wasn’t going to post this, as it has nothing at all to do with astronomy. The last few days didn’t offer much from the apod.
I don’t know why anyone at NASA thinks this has anything to do with astronomy. But I smell climate change! There must be a budget meeting upcoming with some representative who wants to play spewing for dollars.

Yes, we must immediately tax ourselves into penury to keep the volcanoes from erupting. Quick, before it’s too late!
sig226, this really is a lovely picture. It does have stars in the background, and it looks like an old Amazing Stories cover. Thank you for posting it from among the slim pickings.

I don’t think Krakatoa ever stopped being active.
I sailed a sloop through the straits in 1972 and the whole area was steaming, smoking and bubbling.
It was really awe inspiring even then.
No island visible at that time though.

"I forgot that a volcano is a MOUNTAIN. It gets COLD toward the tops of mountains." I discovered that when I was about eight. I made the same miscalculation regarding how hot it would be in the middle of August ... at the top of Pike's Peak!
There was snow banked up against the side of the building. We didn't stay there long; my mom got a killer headache.

We didn’t stay long either. LOL! It was rainy and cold and cold and rainy. What amazed me is that there were villages and roads and schools in the caldera. There was another cone in the middle and you could see lava flows out of vents in the side of that cone.
It stinks, too!
