And how big is the physical object in the picture? I’m assuming that since it was no doubt spotted light years away then it’s probably thousands or tens of thousands of miles across?

The amazing images you see from Hubble are extremely long exposures. Hours and days at a time and then the images are compositted together. This is a fast moving object and hubble can’t fix on it for any length of time.

I doubt anything built for space will leave a dust trail.

Could be mecury or other vapor from an ion engine's exhaust. But It's most likely dust, and it's most likely a dirty snowball.

According to “The Sun” (UK) it is 140 meters wide, moving at 15,000 KPH and is somewhere between Mars and Jupiter. It is about 90 million miles away.
