Preach on the “I don’t knows” in academia. Been doing that since grad school.

The carbon dating was a post in response to something that someone said earlier.

After reflecting upon what others have said (Most notably AussieJoe), I’ve decided that you have a point in saying, “Sounds like somebody likes to throw the model baby out with the science bathwater,” and admit, I should give credit where credit is due.

While I still would have a hard time swallowing any type of timeline presented, I’m willing to give these “scientists” credit. They have furthered our understanding, and that is noteworthy, even if, for now, it is more applicable to theoretical physics (in my view, conjecture), than it is to quantifiable, observable, reality. But I guess that it is such leaps of faith, which get us from point “A” to point “C”, without knowing the particulars of point “B” until it’s hindsight.

I still don’t belive anyone knows the color of a dinosaur. :)

It is possible to know how a system will behave, IF you can account for all constants. However, some systems are so complex, it is impossible as of yet.

This is intrinsically untrue in quantum mechanics, and (in a different way) practically untrue of chaotic systems.

And of course, by Murphy's Law, under the most rigorously controlled conditions of temperature, pressure, and humidity, the organism will do as it damn well pleases ;-)

Cheers!

Thank you for your intellectual honesty. (I totally agree with you re. the color of a dinosaur ;^) )

Agree with you on the dinosaur color. Definitely conjecture. My boys and I have had that conversation....”Daddy, How do scientists know the color of dinosaur skin?????”

The “I don’t knows” are one of toughest things my students have trouble understanding about science. That and field theory. ;)

Ah, what’s a measly 150 million years when you’re talking 4.5 billion or so years ago? :D

How about 6000 years ago? That is the biblical position.

Actually I was referring to “dumb” as illustrated by your misuse of the word Luddite in this context.

Thanks for proving my point.

Ah, so all you have is ad hominem. Nice to see the ignorant always use the same gambit.

Since I was pointing out an actual defect--the misuse of the word "Luddite" in that context--what I said was not ad hominem, so I guess you'll need a refresher course in the detection and labeling of informal fallacies.

Brilliant post, and I’m not being sarcastic in the least.

Thanks, but given the subject, I can humbly say that I was only the conduit.

. . . . Oh nooez! That completely discounts all of TToE, since the Earth is only 6,000 years old and this proves so-called “science” is just guesswork! (/Creationist)

Write 100 times on the blackboard:

Empirical knowledge: GOOD

Wild, drug-induced speculation by the liberal
assitant professors of your youth: BAD!!!!

“I don’t believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old. Man, however, may very well be.”

Except present day human mitrochrondial DNA traces back 150,000 years and that's not considering that most of the human population was wiped out 74,000 years ago when Mt. Toba decided to become a supervolcano...

“How do you know God did not go back in time and planted the remmants to give man something to do”

More logical is that G_d created the “remmants” when He created the Earth. Not necessary to go back in time, if G_d knows everything and has planned everything from the outset of the creation of the Universe.

Just saying.
