The Gulf of California goes pretty far to the east.

Where the Colorado empties into the Gulf of California is still southwest of the Rocky Mountain-based headwaters in Colorado. The Colorado does not flow southeast to the Gulf of California.

Lots of rivers flow North. Look at a map of Siberia or Canada. Even here in the US.

Thanks decimon. 55 million years ago a river as big as the modern Colorado flowed through Arizona into Utah in the opposite direction from the present-day river. Writing in the October issue of the journal Geology, they have named this ancient northeastward-flowing river the California River, after its inferred source in the Mojave region of southern California.
