I just finished another book by Barton, I forget the title, about the religious beliefs of the Founders. Fascinating, of course. Barton is a national treasure.

Jerusalem's Traitor: Josephus, Masada, and the Fall of Judea by Desmond Seward, about the Roman-Jewish war of 66-70 A.D. Excellent, so far.

Dinesh D’Souza: Roots of Obama’s Rage

What did you think about D'Souza's thoughts about Obama's past?

"WARNING: This book contains ideas that will not sit well with what you learned in high school 'social studies' classes. Constitutionolatry and the received wisdom of the nature and purpose of the American State emerge from these pages battered and limping. Reading this book may result in changes in your thinking." Placed tongue in cheek into one of the reviews. I'll pick this one up for certain.

What's this? A FReeper bashing the Constitution?

When I first started it I thought it might be a psychological study. It was partly that but mostly it was a well reasoned argument that he has inherited an anti-colonialist and anti-neocolonialist mindset from his Kenyan father, his mother and his other mentors.

It makes a lot of sense to me. I never saw him as particularly religious outside of some touchy-feely, all religions reflect the truth, kind of mindset so his overtures to the Muslim world can be attributed to a (misinformed) belief that the Muslim world is backwards because of Western oppression.

It does fit most of his decisions and pronouncements.

His tack to the middle these days is disturbing though, because I see it as merely a pragmatic ploy to get re-elected. In a second term, I would expect him to turn on the afterburners in his quest to bring down "the empire." As if by doing that it will improve the lot of the rest of the world.

One thing I really am left with after reading that book is that if he is still stuck in that anti-colonial mindset he is nowhere near as intelligent as his minions continue to argue.

How come I keep missing these threads, as often as I am online at FR? Anyway : I just finished the one volume , abridged edition of Sir James George Frazer's Golden Bough. At some point this year, I plan to buy all THIRTEEN volumes and read the whole thing as he intended it to be read.

I am also buying Alfred Hitchcock anthologies online for cheap , and rereading them in the quest for ONE story read in one years ago. No clue as to the author or title, I think the anthology was early to mid 1970s, and it's about the aftermath of a young girl's murder on those who knew her : Divorce, fear, abandonment, obsession...I hope I find it, and it's as good as I remember.

I should be on your ping list. I used to get these unless someone else on FR does the same thing.
